I test drove my first SRT today and it kicked ass!!!

I am looking for a new car because my R/T has 97,000 miles on her and I am looking for a newer reliable car. The two main cars that I am looking at is an SRT or a Cobalt SS. The SRT I looked at today has 28,000 miles and the asking price is $16,400. Should I go for the SRT or the Cobalt SS? or maybe just keep my car for another year?

Keep in mind I have had nothing wrong with the R/T and it has been really good to me, but I am afraid that shit will need to be replaced soon like brakes, clutch, etc... Gimme some clues on what to do..

What year SRT? If you are happy with the Neon family, get the srt but if you want to move on get the Cobalt. Is it a sc/ss? Maybe wait for the tc/ss? I'd say just keep the r/t for now and watch her get to 100,000. Parts for the srt (brakes and such) are going to be more expensive, keep that in mind.

If I were you, I'd keep the r/t for anther year, them buy an '04 srt for @11k. You get the benefit of an LSD and stage 1 injectors without the drawback of throwing codes that the '05's have. You'll still be able to find them with less than 30k on them next year.

If your R/T has been well maintained I see no reason you cannot get another 100,000 reliable miles out of it. Just keep maintaining it and replacing the maintenance items as necessary. Unless you are looking at major work on it... it is always cheaper to maintain a car than purchase a new one. Not only that, but you know what you have with the R/T.

But, if the bug has bitten you for a new car... well there isn't much stoppin' of that. Been there, done that! :)

Keep the R/T and get the SRT as well. (this is a neons forum, what did you think I would say?)

:withstupid: You won't get nothin' but screwed on trade in value.
If you must trade then work the deal first then mention trade, so you really know what you're getting for it. You can get $4000 to $5000 selling it yourself, and lucky to get $2000 trade.
Edit: I would recommend doing the timing belt, especially if it's in your mechanical abilities to do it yourself, as that will be a big factor in selling point. No one wants to buy a car for $4K then have to shell out another $600+ to get the belt done. That lost alot of sellers sales when I was looking.

Thanks for the opinions guys...

I actually changed the timing belt last December. That SRT is so sweet though but I think the right thing to do is just wait another year and save some more money. I am sure I can find a SRT out there. I am just worried because I still have the original clutch on a 97,000 mile car, I just don't want everything to go at once.

I was thinking out just changing it out now so I save myself the hassle..

Keep the neon as a beater and get something a little nicer.

You can get a 2001 s2000 with 40,000 miles for about $16,000
or 2004 wrx with about 40,000 miles for about $16,000

As long as you don't thrash the clutch it should last a while. Mine has 122,000 on the original, and still feels strong.

I hope that you'll be able to find one that isn't trashed when you are ready to buy.

Keep the R/T regardless. Especially if it's paid off or close to it since the dealer will never give you anything close to what it's worth. Save up some cash and put a decent down payment on the SRT of your choice when you're ready. I was on the same road as you as far as buying a new car but since my car's paid off, and I kinda like NOT having a car payment  , I'm holding off for now and taking care of my '01 for the time being.
