interior passenger side fan noise

So here's my problem: what I believe to be the air fan on the passenger side, situated below and behind the glovebox, is making a rattling noise (kind of like an old computer cooling fan). It stops when I turn the air off (the noise happens on a/c and vent, but not when it's off).
Am I correct in diagnosing it as the vent fan? Secondly, is this an easy fix?

It more than likely is the vent fan, but the word you're looking for is squirrel cage/cage fan. But either way, have you messed with it before? If not then it's probably just worn out and needs to be replaced. Most of the time the cages are a pain to replace on their own and the same with the motors so it's usually easier to replace the whole assembly.

dude mine has made noise twice...both time i droped it out and it was just leaves....its only 3 screws...the one the back is sorta tight but its pretty easy to get out....just pull it out and run the fan motor with it out...make sure it dont hit anything tho....unless you wanna smack your fingers on it...make you a real man! lol

Thanks for the info. When I have a sunny day I'll check it out - it's stopped for the moment.

Yep, if it comes and goes, it is more than likely something caught in there. Just be careful it isn't something alive that can bite you.
I'm serious.
You wouldn't believe what we have found in there before. Mice, rats, snakes, and once, a pissed off squirrel! Never did find out for sure how he wound up there....
But, yeah...probably leaves. Probably....

If the car has been wrecked before it could also be glass that got down the defrost vent too.
