If American workers lose jobs due to captive imports, that is a problem, at least for me. Never mind the fact that the Fiat range (according to their website) is a pretty motley looking bunch of vehicles IMO.
The UAW is the downfall of the american car industry. Unless Fiat can do something about the unions, they're going to be in chapter 11 in no time.
You can't have unskilled laborers making 50-60-70K a year, offer them benefits, a pension, have all the call out issues, meet union rediculous demands etc etc and then be expected to turn a profit. It's just not happening.
Even in Europe, specifically the UK they're had to cut worker's earns. You can't do that in the US.

1. UAW members are not "unskilled laborers." While I haven't been a UAW member (my sister was when she worked at KTP and my late father was before being in management at Chrysler), I have been in the Sheetmetal Worker's Union and the Teamsters and I know personally that you just can't walk in off the street and do these jobs. "Unskilled"? Nope.
2. UAW and CAW members have had benefits cut many times over the last few years so I fail to see how this differs from the situation in the UK and the rest of Eurpoe that you describe.

How about we get this thread back to the original topic?

Dodge should bring back the neon, run them all with 2.4L n/a engines with an srt-4 model with the turbo

You're clouding the issue. I used to have a Union job. While it is true SOME go through an apprentice program, most do not. It doesn't take skill to operate a lugnut gun or screw simple parts on. Electricians, Sprinkler fitters etc is a different issue all together. This isn't the 1920's. Labor has been federally regulated for years. There is no reason to even have a union anymore other then to strong arm a corporation. The Unions do nothing but abuse the system they created and they're now reaping what they've sowed.
opie0669 wrote:.all they want is fair pay, so they can buy a house and live an ok life with out resorting to food stamps

Isn't that everyone? But why do I, and you have to pay for it through our tax money? Non union members do ok, right? They make WAYYYY over minimum wage, have health benefits and a pension.

opie0669 wrote: (Europe is all union... thus the term socialism) why is it ok for these monkey minded execs to make hundreds of millions a year making bad decsions, and bad for blue collars to just "get by".
Probably because they went to college and have degrees. They usually have education. But that's not even the point.
Basically that's all hateraide. "Why should he make what he makes and I don't" is the wrong mentality. If people spent more time improving themselves and not worrying about what others were doing we'd be better off as a country.
When you start capping what people make in an attempt to make things fair (ie support union workers with our tax money) it nothing but a road to socialism/communism. In fact a "Pay Czar" was just created the day before. Watch all the quality execs flee these companies. They call it "Brain Drain"

So much for staying on topic.

x2. Some redesigned headlights, bumpers and skirts and I would be very interested. Maybe an AWD version since that seems to be the trend. I think an AWD 240hp neon would be fun as anything.

Since dodge has been in the resurrecting state of mind bringing back things like the charger and challenger their "neon" equivalent should be called the Dart.

Yes. Chrysler allowed the Neon nameplate to become tainted because of the 1GN head gasket issue. Then DCX made things worse by cheapening the 2GN with each model year. Now the Neon name brings up bad thoughts in the minds of consumers so whatever small car (or, hopefully, cars) that the new Chrysler Group comes out with, the Neon name probably won't be resurrected.

I agree. Unfortunately, if they do bring it back, they'll probably put the 1.8 148hp I4 from the caliber in it. Hmmm... That's more power than I have... I wonder if i could do a caliber swap!

dude this is sick, look at all these neon websites and enthusiasts. every damn person here does not think their car is o.k or shitty....why not bring it back and earn respect, cause i know no one here has it with out having had to prove them selves first. beef up the friggin things and for fu## sake is it that hard to make a "reliable" vehicle that will down the line have a good resale value..friggin cheap skates cuttin corners... damn i love my car, hate "big 3" mentality...I'll bet if you gave all of us the bail out money those idiots recieved we could with ease build a car company and thrive...imagine that 2gn dealerships...fast, loud, sick lookin....damn we rule!!!

sadly the amount of enthusiasts is outweighed 100 to 1 by people who already have a negative image of the "neon" name.

True that. Consumer reports, etc. pretty much killed it's sales, and DCX's lack of advertising/failure to point out/defend that the 2gn is not the same car as the 1gn. Heck, even a quote in AllPar falsely berates the fuel economy.

The only way to change ppl's opinion is to make them drive one. (MTX of course) IDK if I would have been nearly as enthused with an ATX.

I was one of the haters, until looming $1.90 gas prices forced me to give up using the XJ for a DD.

If there is anything I hate about my Neon it is that 3-speed ATX.

If there was a 4-speed non-electronic version that would be sweet.

O/T... a little.

Meh, I bet with enough thinking, an AW-4 controller could be used.

(Aisin Warner 4 speed in jeeps, AKA Toyota)

There are a few mods on the net for "manually" shifting the Jeep ATX.

What I see as the sacrifice, is the smooth shifting, and the fail safes built into the software that the 40/41te has. No more clutch volume index. Basically when the clutches wear too much, they will go to the point of total destruction, rather than limp mode.
As long as there is a reliable way to engage/disengage the solenoids, it should shift. You just don't want two gears at once.

I wanted a SRT hood for my neon but i have recently found out that it is cheaper to buy a carbon fiber hood than it is to buy a "primed" stock hood at the dealership...so on and so forth.... they cooked thier own death brew so f##k 'em....hey that sounds good brew.....

I'm not really sure what all the fuss is about fiat and chrysler. Fiat is still in business for a reason, so I think they can help structure a new business plan for chrysler. There will always be another company willing to buy the chrysler name, but who really knows what's gonna happen.

Agreed; however, I won't be one of those first out of the gate to purchase one of the new products that comes out of the new company of Fiat/Chrysler.

I will wait to see how the products fair out, what the market has to say about them and how reliable they are over a period of time.

According to all the reports the Fiat 500 will be the first product to make an appearance in the Chrysler dealerships.
