05 sxt mtx reverse

Post by bige1030 » Mon Sep 12, 2005 1:09 am

My 05 SXT, of the MTX flavor, has 1600 miles on it, and I've owned it for over a month. On occasion, when I put it into reverse, the gear doesn't set fully. I can tell because when I gently let out the clutch to the friction point and give it a little gas, the car grinds and doesn't go backwards. It seems like moving into neutral and slamming the shifter into reverse will get me going backwards.

This happened to me about three times this past week.

Is there something wrong with my reverse gear, or am I not pulling the shifter down hard enough?

Could I have caused this problem myself? I used to forget to put it into gear when parking, so I got myself into the habit of pulling the shifter down to reverse with the engine off and the clutch engaged. Is that bad?

It's painfully embarrasing to admit that I'm still an mtx n00b.

My '05 is exactly the same way, just gotta pull harder. Just to be safe, though, push the clutch in to drop it into a gear from neutral, even if the car is off. It makes it easier.

It's not only Neons. All MTX's will get funked up. Seems like the everything is just not-quite synch'd up and you gotta' run through each gear to get em' all lined up for flight. (My Avenger and VW's all did it, 71 Bronco, My old Jeep, etc.)

my 04 will do it too. Ill put it in and gas it, looking back, letting off the clutch... and im not going anywhere. Sometimes it will start to go then kick out of the gear. So any more, i put it in reverse twice before letting off the clutch!

When mine does that i usually just put it into first and then put it back into reverse and it works fine.
