Neon I averaged ~22 city, 28 highway. At various points, it had K&N CAI, 60mm TB, custom cat-back. Nothing special. Sometimes lower, depending on if I beat on the car or not.

Cobalt I average ~25 city, 32 highway. On LONG, straight trips, I average 36+ highway. Depending on speed. Highest I've hit was Toledo to cleveland, 60-65mph whole time. 39.2mpg :D

Lucky you. The auto sucks for gas mileage in this thing. 20 or less in town and between 25-30 on the highway. I can't wait to get a manual swap done. I had a 4-cyl Dodge Dakota before this and got 25 in town and 30-35 on the highway with a 22-gal gas tank.

I've always gotten better mileage in a standard. I prefer to control my own gears and I get a better balance of mileage and performance that way. Especially on the highway with a 5th gear to put it in. The only reason this thing has an auto in the first place is because I was married when I bought it and my ex wife couldn't drive a stick and it was pretty much impossible to teach her. I know I could get 25-30 in town with this little car if it had a stick.

Driving from Baltimore to College Park daily a few years ago I would get 32 - 35mpg. On a trip I can hit 40.

With the exceptions of trips I don't check mpg because it really doesn't matter. I don't drive the car but 100 miles a week tops, most of time less.

Have any of you noticed that the gas mileage gets worse once your tank goes under half full? It's weird, the first two quarters of a tank hardly budge at all, but then when you get past that, it drops rather quickly... someone on 1GN and another guy from here told me once that it's a computer thing, but neither person went into details... anyone know anything about this?

Bout 15-18 in the diesel. Heh.

It's not using fuel at a faster rate, it's just the way the float is set up. For just an example, let's say that the 1st half of float travel is 8 gallons, and the second half is 4.
Another thing is, how much past the top of float travel is it being filled? You may travel 60 miles before the fuel level drops enough to let the float come off the top limit of travel.

Hope that makes sense. :D

It just seems that it is using fuel faster, because the float/sender is not the most accurate thing in the world. Mine seems consistent in miles to quarter tank until the last quarter, then it seems to drop faster. If I really queeze as much fuel in as I can, I can go as much as 135 miles before it hits 3/4 tank. Then the following two usually get abuot 100 mile each, if I drive reasonable. The last quater I can get about 60 to 80 if I push it.
The only way you really know what the gallons are to the mark, would be to completely drain the tank, and add 1 gallon at a time and check the gauge each time. On level ground. changing the rake of the ride height front to rear also affects the gauge accuracy to some degree. A factory sprung neon usually has it's ass in the air, where most drops almost level the car.

Also iv heard that the baffle systems and other hardware sit in the bottom portion of the tank thus there is less fuel to use in the bottom half of the tank.

and i get roughly 25mpg city and 37 highway, i drove on a 3000km road trip a few months back and averaged 38-42 :)

Mine had 29/36 est. in the window sticker when I bought it. They test cars at 58mph for their freeway mileage though, so the OE estimate is garbage for real world driving. Manuals are always capable of better mileage for a few reasons. They are inherently lighter in weight, but more importantly, it is because they lose less power at the drivetrain. Torque converters and the ridiculous amount of moving parts in a ATX = parasitic loss.

I average around 25-27. I do 90% street driving and I have a lead foot. Can't beat that with a stick.

P.S. Congratulations OP, this is the 1000th gas mileage thread on 2gn. Where's his prize, Johnny!?

I am pissed when I don't get at least 31 MPG overall. I am happy when I get 35+.

I see 330+ mile per tank all the time. Add in about 10-10.5 gallons of gas till full.
