i think the owner before me put a smaller tank in my car. I think my ACR is supposed to have a 12 gallon tank (correct me if im wrong) but i think it is more somewhere around 10-10.5 . I prolly get around 27-28 highway i feel.

05 Automatic;
300 miles per tank prior to hypermiling;
400 miles per tank using hypermiling techniques.
(I do not role through stop signs / lights, draft)
I will not refuel until the low fuel light changes from steady on to flashing. Even then I know I can go for about 5 miles.
Total gallons at refuel - 12 to just a little below 13.

I regularly get up to 40 mpg out of my stock R/T. The only mod I've made is to stick a K&N cone in to replace the stock filter and changed the plugs for Bosch Super 4s. (I'm going to change the leads shortly for Magnecor blues too). I'm happy to sit on the motorway (freeway) at 56mph or 2500 revs for a couple of hours at a time. Basically, if I run the tank from full to empty (and I know I can get 40 miles on the orange light), I get 400 miles out of a tank on freeway driving which I find pretty impressive for my 2.0 especially at UK fuel prices! I always carry a 10 litre fuel can in the trunk just in case I run out!

So you cram almost 13 gallons into a 12.1 gallon tank that probably has a gallon or so still in it?iskyfly wrote:05 Automatic;

Just wanted to clear something up, 'cause I don't like to intentionally BS. In my Chrysler Owners Manual, it says that the tank capacity is 47 liters, I converted that to 12.22 US Gallons. Now accepting that UK measurements are slightly different to US measurements, I converted US Gallons to UK litres and worked it out that my tank is 10.34 UK Gallons, which obviously means unless my maths absolutely stink, that my 400 miles out of a tank equals about 40mpg? I would like to point out, I do do a lot of my driving in the dead of night with little traffic, so hardly any stop/starting, lights etc. I've actually driven a true 40 miles on the flashing orange light and ran out of gas as I trundled onto the gas station forecourt.
If I'm totally off the mark and wrong here, I'll shut the hell up and behave myself. If I am completely wrong, please someone tell me what the actual maths are, so I don't make myself out to be totally bone!

According to my conversion
47L = 12.4 US Gallon
12.4 US Gallon = 10.3 UK Gallon
You can't do the number of miles driven by the number of gallons in the tank. it has to be the number of gallons actually put in the tank. I highly doubt you run on fumes pulling into the gas station everytime.
if you get 400 miles out of a tank, ~35 - 40mpg is reasonable to assume.

Thanks for coming up with the same calculation as me.
Because the route I take is the same all the time and because I am absolutely comfortable with driving on the orange light for so long as I do, I have on several occasions arrived on the forecourt on fumes. I use the same gas station and pump all the time, I once ran out of gas 50 yds from the gas station hence the reason I now carry a spare gas can. You are correct though, I don't run into the gas station on fumes every time, that would be plain dumb.
I only take my figures from when I fill up, and I've stuck 46 litres in the tank on several occasions (I've got gas receipts to prove it because I have to submit them to my boss) so I know I've only just about had a litre left in it. It certainly feels like it too when I take a corner (engine coughs a bit). I will gladly accept therefore that I get about 35 to 40 mpg when I drive like a stupid old git. There are plenty of occasions though when I kick it for a day and I'm lucky if I get 25mpg.

I wouldn't run it so long with the level that low. Fuel cools the fuel pump. You are shortening it's life.
How much are you saving, if you have to buy a fuel pump a lot sooner than what it may have lasted?
What difference does it really make by running down to 1/4 tank and refilling, VS going to about a gallon left? Other than seeing the miles/KM adding up on the trip odo.

Ugh, mileage on this tank SUCKED. My low fuel light just came on which means there's about 3 gal. left in the tank and only 144 miles on the trip meter so far this tank...
I used to get at least 20 in town consistently before this damn 10% ethanol blend they're forcing us to use around here. Car's more sluggish and gets crappier gas mileage, now how is this supposed to help with emissions again?

My tank is 12.5 gallons and probably has less than a gallon in it.
I put the nozzle in the thank, set it to "auto", go into the store, come back out and "top off" slowly just once.
I do.racer12306 wrote: if you get 400 miles out of a tank,
Well, if my engine is running I am guessing that fuel is flowing and therefore available to "cool the fuel pump." (if indeed it needs cooling by fuel).occasional demons wrote:I wouldn't run it so long with the level that low. Fuel cools the fuel pump. You are shortening it's life.

Yes, I do like seeing the miles add up on the trip odo and I like making less fuel stops.

iskyfly,
Don't know why I'm doing this to myself again, 'cause someone out there will be convinced I'm bsing, but I'm with you on this one.
I again had gotten 400 miles over the previous week to a single tank when I refuelled on Monday. I live right next to one of the main freeways here in the UK. Put it all to the test late on Monday night. Filled the car to the filler neck, travelled 131.5 uninterrupted miles (Save 2 rotarys and 5 sets of lights) in 5th gear in 2 hours 25 minutes at a constant 56 mph. Filled her up immediately on arriving at my destination. I'd used 14.45 litres of fuel which equates to 3.178 UK gallons which works out at 41.37 mpg. Fuel gauge now shows 3/4 full. Fuel cost me 14 UK pounds (Approx $9.50 at our exchange rate? - our fuel costs approx 60 cents a litre). If my math is totally off in all this, then I apologise.

14.45L = 3.817 US liquid gallons
131.5 miles / 3.817 US gallons = 34.45 US MPG
131.5 miles / 3.178 UK gallons = 41.38 UK MPG
Still not bad at all.
