Curious about Engine Bay

Does anyone know the exact dimensions of an 2002 R/T engine bay and any year SRT-4? I've found a possible donor motor for a swap, but curious about fitment issues...i'd really like to be able to squeeze the engine as well as the srt-4's heat shield in if possible...i did a search, but couldn't find anything exact (searching pwnz's me)...also, i had a question that maybe someone can answer, is the srt-4's chasis strengthened to handle the higher torque rating, or is it the same as a run of the mill neon? i'd think not considering the power it has, but if anyone can give me this info, that'd be great!

I don't know about reinforcement but an srt is exactly the same as a neon in dimension. It is the same exact chassis. The engine mounts are interchangeable on both engines. It is a very tight fit but it was engineered that way.

yea, numerous people have done the swap. same basic dimensions. that's what mattdog's adapter for the sohc/magnum heads lets you run the srt4 turbo, intercooler, intercooler piping and intake system.

Yes, it is very simple, and fits like a glove....2002srt4 and myself have both done the swap....his was on an 02 R/T and mine on a 00 ES.....if you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of us for info......

awesome, thanks for the responses...i kinda figured everything was exactly the same, but i just want to make sure this is gonna work without any problems...i did hear that the srt-4 transmission is either a tight squeeze or doesn't fit...will it bolt right up to the transmission currently in my car without a problem, or is it best to stick with the heavy duty transmission from the srt-4? So the motor will fit with the heat shield but it'll be a tight squeeze...awesome...sorry for all the questions, it's just this is a major project to tackle and i'm a tad obsessive compulsive when it comes to doing things right, haha. thanks again for answering my questions.

I would recommend that you use the T850 tranny from the SRT-4. Leave the motor/tranny completely assymbled, and put it in from the bottom if you have access to a lift. It's much easier that way. The motor can only be put in from the top if the tranny, intake manifold, and turbo/manifold is removed.

That's not entirely true Josh. It is possible to put it in from the top with just the intake manifold and tranny mount removed. You have to go in at an angle and get the tranny under the frame rail. After that it should slip in. There is maybe a 1/4 inch of clearance on the sides and back of the bay but it can be done. I've done mine twice.

so which would be easiest, dropping the motor with intake manifold and other parts on it in first, or leaving the transmission on and doing it from underneath?

Do you have access to a lift?

well, at the air force base my dad is stationed at, they have lifts at the auto shop, you pay 3 bucks an hour to use the lift, tools, and whatever the heck else you need, so yeah, i have access to a lift...i'm guessing that's probably the easiest way to go at it then...

YES!!!!!!!!! that's exactly what I used.....very simple.....very very simple.....just make sure you are able to leave the car there if it cannot be finished in 1 day....
