resonator??

As ignorant as it might sound, can someone be more specific about our resonator that is located in our fender well that goes to our intake box(a pic would help alot). What exactly is it? Like a second filter or what? I've heard that removing it would be a quick slight performance upgrade. Is it safe/recommended to be removed? Once again, sorry for the ignorance. :tardbang:
