Looking for a Neon

Post by Twisted Noodle » Mon Aug 31, 2009 11:01 pm

Hey All,

I was at a car show this past weekend and met Chris (BlackRoseRacing). Our cars were competing against each other in the show. My 87 Shelby Lancer and his Neon. Unfortunately mine lost... Gratz Chris!
Well, anyway.. I have been a big fan of Neons ever since I was in college back in '96. Up until now I have never had the need for one. Always needed the truck.

Well, due to a lot of traveling with my current position and the sudden cutting of my mileage to jobs, I won't be taking the truck, or my tools anymore. No mileage...No tools. I am going to buy a neon probably a second gen, but after seeing a few good prices on some first gen Neons I wanted to see what you all thought.

I have done a little research on the 1gn and 2gn. the engines have pretty much the same output. The 2gn are heavier but a nicer ride..

What are your opinions? If I needed parts fast? The aftermarket? Tuning?

I have someone that has a 98 the has low power and is bucking and surging..thinks it needs a new motor $300
I'm thinking.."does it really need a new motor?" Should I waste my money on a "what if" 98 or hold out for a 2000 + that is in my price range?

Thanks guys/gals :tardbang:

1st gen for power aftermarket ect

2nd gen for srt swap appearance(some might say)

it all depends what your goals are i mean i would get a1st gen cheaper better mpg (depending) ive seen 1st gens go much faster mod for mod then a second gen

It's not that 1st gens go faster at all. Maybe a tenth. It's just that the general audience for a 2nd gen is going after carbon fiber, where the average 1st genner has been there, done that, and have now moved on to power.

I personally prefer 2gns because of their overall feel and look. I've had a 95, 99, 04, and 05. The 04 and 05 were much more of a pleasure to drive. The 99 got the best mileage, though. Had PS and AC removed.

I love my 2gn, but I drool over 1gn coupes all day. I say get a 1st coupe in like NYG or someother color that is rare/cool.

The 2g definitely looks nicer, especially the 02 or r/t models. The 1g was ruined for me by that damn "HI" commercial, it just seems like such a chick car.

For a daily driver a 2g is gonna be the better car, for a drag car the 1g is gonna be cheaper.

1gns are easy for track and ride is harsh.

2gn newer less problems to replace parts IMO

I'm not to concerned about ride quality. My current "Toy" is an '87 Shelby Lancer. It rides like a covered wagon..lol My truck isn't too much better..

:D Most 80's Shelby Dodge's rode that way. My brother's CSX was horrible on frost joints.

Hey now, my big fat Daytona rides pretty nice! Granted, it's also over 3000lb.

The 1st gens aren't bad, but if you get one that hasn't had the head gasket done, get ready to do it. The good head gasket was introduced halfway through the 1998 model year I believe, so pay close attention to that.

Personally, I would spend the money for a 2nd gen myself. In my opinion, the interiors are much nicer, they're quieter inside, it feels like there's more room all around, and they're just as easy to work on as the 1st gens.

Whichever you choose, 1st gen or 2nd gen, they are an excellent little commuter car. Cheap to buy, cheap to fix, cheap to insure, and for most people, every bit as reliable as a more expensive car its size. Oh, and go with the manual. Even if you're not a big fan, these cars are incredibly easy to drive even with the stick.

I think an important question is what is your price range?

2gn for comfort
1gn for performance (generally speaking)

Well, the price range I am looking at is pretty low. I found a 2gn for 400 and a 1gn for 300 on Criagslist. Both need work but I am prepared for that.

Plans might be changing now because I am traveling down to Mobile Alabama to apply for a job. If I get it then I am moving my family down there.

I might get rid of my truck because the 14 mpg does me no good. I won't drive the Shelby Lancer because I'm want to keep the miles off it.

Eventually I will buy one. I was leaning towards a 2g, but the prices on the 1st Gens with decent miles are hard to pass up.

I love my DD '97 ACR Coupe, but, for a road trip, I'd drive my son's '03 R/T any day
