After shifter swap, key won't release and come out

Post by Mopar65 » Sat Jan 23, 2010 1:24 am

So I swapped over the PT Cruiser shifter into the neon today. After not being able to find my keys, I grabbed the spare to make sure that the car would shift into the gears properly which it did. The damn key will not come all the way back to the release position. I can go all the way forward and changes gears, but I can't get the key out. Any suggestions Im really stuck

What happened with the shift interlock?

I started unplugging a bunch of shit behind the steering wheel, and of course put it back together, but nothing. The key that is stuck in the ignition is not the sentry key, it is a spare key. I know that it works because I have used it before and actually unlocked the car with it before putting it into the ignition. I'm at a complete loss here. I pulled the shifter back out of the car so now nothing is in it's place and the thing is still stuck

Also too even when the key is not engaged, the shifter when it was still mounted would be able to moved through all the gear without touching the brake pedal

It's shooting me a P 0513 code as well. Invalid Skim Key. Which is true, but why the fuck can't i get it out??? GRRRRRRR

Looking at the shifter cables with the console off, there are two cables. The one that controls which gear is selected and one that tells the computer to unlock the key if I understand correctly. Both are spring loaded. Anyway the one that controls the ignition lock is white and smaller than the gear selection. There is a clip on top of it which I took out and then put back in. I put the clip in at the wrong notch and it had to be in a different one. So to fix it I pulled the clip, depressed the spring, pulled the small metal wire cable, and the key released.

At least a mis adjusted one.

Thanks for the heads up, as this might help someone else, at least someone with the correct search words....
