Sweet coolant smell from heater..

Post by danman132x » Thu Feb 25, 2010 2:01 pm

I almost positive that when I turn my heat up, it has a faint smell of antifreeze. I know it's nothing else because antifreeze just has that unique sweet smell to it. It only does it when I blow warm to hot air. Thing is, I have no leaks anywhere.. as far as I can tell. My level in the engine is always in the same spot when fully hot, and I've never had to add any. Could it be a leaking heater core maybe? But if it is, why am I not loosing antifreeze.

My guess would be the heater core as I had the same issue. Mine did not start to drop the coolant level until it was leaking so bad it smoked. The only other thing I can think of is a coolant leak under the hood getting on a hot part but not sure exactly how that would happen without a noticeable leak. Hope you figure it out and let us know.

Pretty much always going to be a heater core when the smell is coming through the vents. It may not be leaking, yet (at least anything you are noticing if it is), but when it actually goes it will.

Yep sounds like a possible heater core leak. Might be very minor, since you don't notice a leak.

how many miles on your car? also do u notice it more with inside or outside air option on? sometimes if you have the inside air it will circulate a weird smell.

Sounds just like mine was. Just a pinhole in the core so you don't notice the leak but you still get the coolant smell from the steam that hole is producing.

Bah, just remove the heater hose and loop it back. (under the hood)

Heat is over rated. :D

Seriously tho, if it decides to leak severely, this is an option, 'till you pull the front half of your interior out of you car to fix it. Just don't kink the hose.

Here is the link to my thread. If you go towards the bottom you can see how I had to bypass it until I got the core replaced.

I'm really not liking the sounds of this.. Looks like it's going to be a pain to replace, I'll have to bust out some manuals. Thanks guys for the help so far.

Oh it's a huge pain to replace. Figure at least 2 days and the entire dash has to come out.

PM me if you want to borrow an FSM.

I just replaced my heater core last month. $72.00 for the heater core. $400 dollars in labor. This was from a dealer I know and gives me a helluva break on labor too.

The whole dash.... Please don't tell me the steering wheel too. This sounds like it's going to be a hugee pain. I have a copy of the FSM on my computer, but I don't know if I'm up for the task. Can I still drive the car with the dash apart.. providing the steering wheel stays on? I might just have to cough up some money to fix it at the dealer.

Edit..
so I checked my FSM. Yea, there is no way I'll be doing it :( A lot of steps, including evacuating the A/C refrigerant. Gonna have to see how much the dealer wants for it...

Car is only coming up to 70,000 miles too and the coolants been changed a couple times also..
