Post by skeeter1231 » Tue Dec 28, 2010 4:36 am

Hi I'm new to the site and neons I just bought an 02 Mtx 2.0 its got a Cai and I'm thinkin someone has put the rt exhaust on it. Got two questions one when shifting to third it wants to grind gears any suggestions Wat it might be. Two I'm wanting to rally this car so wats the best route motor wise I should go the motor only has 58000 so I would like to use it instead of the 2.4 swap.

Hmmmmmm. First, welcome. Now to get to the heart of the matter, ralley. Besides having enough power to move along, which is going to be hard to gain without the swap your focus should start with suspension and brakes. Coilovers will be a must as well as some rear disc conversion if you don't have four wheel discs already. There are many other suspension upgrades you can do, so look into those. The NGC computer will restrain many hp gain boltons, which is why the srt swap is such a common path.

I would suggest searching this site first to find the answer to your questions like "what is NGC?" Check out the FAQ section...lots of good starter info there.

Oh, and welcome :)
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Suggestions:

-clean it up

-fix anything broken

-get all the maintenance/service up to date

-then go from there with the modding

as others have mentioned, search the site....
N/A HP is hard to aquire with a 2.0. There are a few bolt ons you can do to get 135-150hp to the wheels, but it's not cheap. For a rally car I honestly can not say what you can or can not do as some classes have restrictions.
Get all wheel disc brakes, do suspension mods, lighten the car, get the motor up to 150hp range and you should be competetive but not powerfull enough to win races.
Unless you can do a swap or forced induction, your options are limited....

As for the grinding in third, you could try adjusting the clutch pedal height. It might help, might not. If it doesn't, then your syncro might be tired.

Third is the trickiest one in mine also. But it does work fine for normal shifting, just not so well for RPM matched clutchless shifting. You better be spot on, or it ain't going to happen.

A worn clutch could cause it too. Sometimes a new clutch will also cause shifting problems. I've had that happen too. Different car tho.

neons are slow. you'd be better with a mongoose stunt bike with pegs :) .....

J/K . Do a few bolts on. Do what is affordable but maintain your driveability status since I am assuming this is your daily driver as well. If you can't afford coilovers then a decent set of springs and struts is the way to go. Tokico Blues with Eibach Pro Kit is always a good balanced choice that people pick on here. Make the car lighter but please do not do the airbag delete. That is retarded in my opinion. You can take out back seat, clean out trunk, and if you wanted to even the passenger front seat. CAI and exhaust would be my first upgrades. Im not a fan of UDP.
