So, I'm moving from Kentucky to Texas and I'm trying to sell my 2001 Neon ACR locally. Everyone, without exception, keeps asking me how much it would cost to install air conditioning. I have no clue. Will the ACR even take air conditioning?

I hate to get rid of this car, it's been great. But I don't feel like taking 2 cars and a moving truck 1,300 miles across the US. Plus, A/C is actually a necessity in Texas imo.

A/C was an option for the ACR. I had it in mine before I removed it.

If you were closer I would love to swap HVAC housings with you. That is one of the biggest hurdles to overcome when installing A/C in a non A/C car.

And just so you know, a non A/C ACR is much more rare than a A/C equiped one

Do you know roughly what it would cost someone to put AC in my car?

I'd never do it, but as I'm selling it, I'm trying to figure out what it would cost for people interested in buying it...

Hard to say. Getting all the parts in good shape would run a few hundred dollars (they can be sourced from any A/C Neon) but labor would be the killer. A shop would charge an insane amount of hours since it is pretty much "custom" work. Expect be charged 8 hours or more.

Gotchya. Is this something a dealership would do? Or would a potential buyer have to find a local shop to do it for them?

While a dealer could do it, I wouldn't recomend it. The fact that you would be using used parts and that there is no set labor time for this job would have the dealer in fits. And they would more than likely charge more since this is a job no dealer tech would want to touch. A local shop may undertake this but you would want to be careful as to thier ability to do it correctly.

There are shops that do add-on A/C systems, but since this is a complete retrofit rather than a bolt/hang-on system it may give them pause.

It wouldn't be too bad, if the A/C equipped HVAC module was in the car. They would just need the engine bracket, and compressor. All else could be aftermarket. I'm sure the hoses/condenser are still available new from your local auto parts. The only thing would be the controls for compressor/fan run.

BUT,

It still isn't going to be cheap, and prolly more than the upgrade in resale value.

Honestly, from my veiwpoint, it isn't that hard a job. But then again I take these cars apart and put them together in my sleep it seems. For a tech that hasn't done any serious work to a Neon is going to be a little overwelmed and will charge accordingly.

And around here that's at least $800. Not worth the A/C.

AC is definitely a very big problem.
in the end you would need to find a wrecked Neon to get all the parts.

Definitely you will not get that money back if you sell the car!

I do fine without AC in the Neon in San Antonio... of course the 2 mile drive to the office helps.
