Post by dcorwin822 » Fri Jul 15, 2011 9:37 pm

going on a 10+ hr road trip in the neon hopefully nonstop. What should I check out / do before we go?

so far we've gotten the cooling system flushed.
will have a OC and filter before we go
brakes were just installed this last spring
regreased the lower ball joints with some nice JT6 grease
tierod ends are still solid / regreased the one i had replaced last early summer
no CEL
o2, plugs and wires were done last summer
timing belt / water pump done last fall
had a drain and fill on the trans not too long ago.
help this isn't a ford and I'm lost.. :-(

Depending on how many miles ago last summer was, you should be fine. If something is going to happen it will. You could replace everything, and still have a failure.

Being a constant run, other than fuel, it shouldn't be too hard on it. Just be sure to carry extra fluids, and keep an eye on fluid levels at fill ups.

I put over 700 miles on mine going to Carlisle and back, without issue, and from the sounds of it, your car is in somewhat better shape than mine. I have over 160,000, a bad inner tie rod or two, the original o2 sensors, and a leaking steering gear. I actually used less oil/fuel this year than last.

In a 2001 Dodge Neon with 152,000 miles I took the following road trip last summer...

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=rouyn ... mra=ls&z=4

About 2,200 miles over a period of 7-days.

In the 6-weeks leading up to the trip I had a lot of issues with the Neon...

-replaced both cv joints given the passenger one exploded
-head gasket external coolant leak
-cam shift and several rockers worn and needed replacement

All those issues happening in a short period of time caused me to feel quite nervous for the trip over concerns about yet another breakdown.

Turns out the trip was uneventful in terms of issues with the Neon.

Some items not on your list...

-check the engine area thoroughly for leaks
and fix as necessary
-replace drive belts if needed
-t-stat... maybe bring a spare with you
-how are the coolant hoses & pipes?
-tires... good tread? ...inflated correctly?
-check the spare and tire change tools
-check the wiper blades
-have the battery tested and clean the
terminals

You might want to bring the following with you...

-cell phone
-cell phone charger that works in the car
-auto club membership or numbers of towing outfits
along the way
-spare fluids for everything
-set of tools
-battery booster
-air compressor to inflate tires
-blanket... never know... might have to
spend the night in the car or lay on it to crawl under
-spare drive belts
-spare turn signal flasher... I never realized what a
show stopper that not working would be until it happened
-duct tape... yes duct tape :)
-spare exterior bulbs
-clean the inside glass of the windshield
-list of OBC codes so you can do the key dance
thing and at least get some idea of what is happening
(search the forum for the key "dance" sequence to
display the codes)
-spare key that operates the ignition... in your wallet
-empty container for gas, water or other liquid
-triangle reflector in case of roadside breakdown
-spare fuses
-first aid kit
-GPS, energy bars and water in case you get lost
-this list is by no means exhaustive... note that the
complete list of items may fill your trunk AND back seat
area. :-)

I got a set of gates hoses on the way cause lsat week while doing the t_stat I noticed they were deteriorating internally. Got a set of the gates blue"racing hoses".

Got a set of belts sitting in the tool chest waiting for hoses so I can do them both at the same time.

Most of the items on your suggested too doo list is all set. Except for the battery. it seems pretty easy to kill that battery.might get that replaced.

Thanks for your input!

I've taken my Neon on several 7+ hour non-stop trips before. I checked the fluids, checked the tire pressure (don't forget to check the spare), and that's it! Pack it up and go.
