Which two repairs do you think I should do?
Which two repairs do you think I should do?
Looking for advice.
I have to do 3 things urgently:
1) fix MTX synchro problem (won't go into 1st and grinds into 2nd)
2) replace clutch (slipping really bad and getting worse), and
3) change shocks & springs (driving on bad struts for 2 years now, it bottoms out bad and the tires are wearing unevenly. I'm going with HP blues and Eibach prokit)
I only have money to do 2 right now. I would like to drive 2,000 miles to visit family over the holidays. What do you think I should do?

Your tires are getting their ass kicked then. Since you plan on driving such a long distance, keep an eye on them as well.

Fix the clutch and the suspension. The clutch might be the actual MTX problem. I'm sure it will go into first from a stop. That's all you need to get going. Removing the MTX without replacing the clutch would make no sense at all.

Um, no. You just hold the clutch in longer, or RPM match better. If the clutch is dragging a bit, it will make the trans harder to shift into gear. Thus giving the symptoms that there is something wrong with the trans.
Edit: If the clutch isn't stopping the input shaft,it will wear out the synchros tho. They can't match shaft speeds efficiently if one isn't totally released from power input.

Holy shit, that makes sense! I stopped being able to get it into 1st about the time the clutch started going. I'll change the clutch and I should have 1st gear back. Then I'll go from there. I ordered the upgrade Stratus clutch today from Rockauto. 2001--2004 Stratus PN 05119occasional demons wrote:Um, no. You just hold the clutch in longer, or RPM match better. I could be wrong but i'm pretty sure that clutch will not fit a t350 trans. Its listed as being for the 2.7V6charlesh wrote:Holy shit, that makes sense! i say 1. & 2. although reading through everything 2. might fix 1.
i'd say if you've got the time, while you've got the trans out for the clutch replacement, go ahead and have a (competent) shop look over the trans, they'll know if they syncro's are bad or not. that'll save you having to take it apart twice.

The suspension boils down to a safety issue if they are bad enough.Johny wrote:I would have to agreemwenzlick wrote:1 and 2. what good is it in having good suspension if you cant drive the car anywhere.

I had my mechanic put the new clutch in today. It's in and running, but I still have to go back so he can look it over and make sure everything is okay (it was a late night).
The clutch releases really close to the ground. I can get used to it, but it's quite a bit different.
I thought I'd get 1st gear back, but it's just as bad or worse--I really have to rebuild the transmission and fix the synchro problem. All the gears were more difficult to get into as soon as the Stratus clutch was in. He had to make an adjustment at the pedal to get it more normal. Another thing, my clutch pedal has a lot of play in it, so that's another thing to fix and may be contributing to the problem.
It's nice to have a clutch that doesn't slip, but it needs more work before it's acceptable.
Here's a question:
When he got it all back to together, I now have an idle problem. It idles high (1,200?) and fluctuates constantly. When driving, I'll release the clutch and the rpms will consistently go up to 3,000 and stay there. Only when I slow way down, it'll drop to the high idle with the constant fluctuation. That's one thing I'll have him look at, but what do you think happened? and what does it have to do with changing the clutch?

Sounds like a vacuum leak, possibly didn't get a hose back on. If the clutch pedal to mater cylinder bushing is sloppy, it will affect the clutch pedal height/clutch engagement. There is a plastic bushing in there that can fail.

It was obvious when we opened the hood today. The pcv was broken. It cost $11 and was fixed in 5 minutes. It idles great now, I just have to get that bushing for the clutch pedal. As it is, the clutch engages pretty close to the ground, but it's totally driveable.
I don't have anything to compare the Stratus clutch to because the original was pretty worn when I got the car. The best I can say is that it feels really solid. It's a lot more fun to drive the car, even with the bad synchros. Even starting out in 2nd all the time, there's no problem driving the car.
Next fix will be the HP blues and Pro-kit.
I'm using 215/35/18 rims. With that size, is there any heads up, or anything I need to watch out for, before going with the HP/Pro-Kit?
