My neon used to be garaged, but now we moved and we're doing construction on the new house.. until that's all done, the neon has to stay outside.. so I was looking into getting a remote starter so the car isn't freezing for the first 10 minutes of my ride every morning.. and if the construction lasts into the summer, to cool the car down.. I remember seeing one from Mopar for around $100, so I foolishly thought it would cost $200 TOPS installed at my dealer.. but I just called a dealer close to my new house and they told me they don't sell remote starters and I'd have to go with a third party.. then I called the dealer that I bought the car from, and they told me that they don't sell one compatible with a 2003 (which I can't confirm, because the mopar site doesn't list parts for the 2003 anymore, but I remember it being there when I first looked this up a year ago), then I was transferred, and the person I spoke to said it would cost $425 + tax installed because they'd have to make a new key or something, since I have the sentry keys.. so I don't know who to believe.. anyone know anything about remote starters? I'd prefer to go with mopar, but if someone else makes one that's cheaper that I can install myself (or have a shop install), I'd have no problem going down that route..

Am I looking at $400 no matter where I go? I was hoping to spend around $200 installed, or I'd even be willing to spend $200 and install it myself..

You should be able to get it installed for around that price at Circuit City. Or if you want to try it yourself I can send you a print out of all the wiring hook-ups and what adapter(s) are needed if you PM me your e-mail.

do you have a manual trans or an auto trans? that makes a big difference. generally one for an auto trans should cost $200 - $300 maybe a little more. but for a manual trans it will cost 2 - 3 times that. mine cost $600 and some. the other thing is you have to find someone who is willing to do one one on a manual trans car.

Alright great, thanks! I can do any sort of work, so long as I have instructions or an idea of what I'm supposed to be doing -- but since it's a sentry key, and I'm dealing with the ignition, I want to make sure I do it right so that it doesn't cause problems and lock up or something -- PM sent

Hey thanks for the reply -- I was replying at the same time you were.. it's an auto.

definetly get all the info you can about the sentry key thing. it might be something as simple as plugging in an extra box or there may be more to it.

Unfortunately that person was telling you the truth. The car will not stay running unless your key (with the chip inside) is in close proximity to the steering column so it can communicate. When they put a remote start on, they actually have to install a key with the same chip into a transponder up in your dash, that way when the car starts, the computer thinks your key is there in the ignition. The price is going to be so much more because a new key is around $80 and the transponder box thingy is about another $100 i think.. plus the extra labor.

That is the reason i decided not to go remote start, not because of the price, but because the SENTRY system would practically be useless.. making it that much easier to steal my car.

im not completly sure but i believe the sentry key would still be active. the only time the transponder would communicate with the computer is when the remote starter is activated any other time its like there is nothing there.

I know this is off topic kind of but didn't want to start a new thread. How much would it be to install an alarm at a place like Circuit City or Best Buy?

honestly your best bet is to call them up and see what they say.

I have remote start w/ my auto...but its a Viper alarm system, and I dont have sentry keys

your probably right about the transponder having to be active.. but if someone pulled that key out and jammed it in the ignition, they could then hotwire the car. at least thats what the shop that installed my alarm told me, which is why i didnt do it. It's a long shot for someone to figure that out.. but personally i wont take the risk just to be a little more comfy on those cold mornings

wow, my transponder doesnt use a key. they did something that mimics the code that is normally sent by the key. i kept both of my keys that were given to me at time of purchase. i guess the place i had my remote starter put in is a little better than most.

i could have had them use a key or their box. it cost about the same so i went with their box.

i looked around once and it was gonna be anywere from 80-120. that was best buy and circuit city.

i'm getting one installed at a local tire shop tomorrow for 30 bucks.... plus the alarm of course.

DEI the parent company of Viper makes a module the simulates your sentry key transponder but it only sends the signal when the remote start is activated.

sounds like a little better setup than they had when i got my alarm, good to know in case i ever wanna add remote start.

It would probably be some good info for Jim if you know the price of that style transponder, and whether or not that is something that can be done himself or if special equipment is needed.

Already sent him the wiring diagrams, Circuit City advertises $50- $80 for the interface and they have a Remote Start for $53

interesting.. so $130 tops to add remote start to an existing alarm. Do you happen to know how difficult it is to set up the interface, or is it somehow plug and play?

Actually, that is for adding a New remote start/Keyless entry system. I'd have to do some more research and know what alarm you were trying to interface with to get interface info.

If you dont care about having the sentry system, a sentry key could run you roghly around $10plustax through me. Thats is for a generic sentry key. The standard key runs $50msrp.....
DCx offers a remote start setup for the 04-05 neon but not the 00-03m why I do not know...
Most aftermarket companies(around wny) will stick a programmed key under the lower column shroud to de-activate the sentry syetem so they can install there cheap remote start setup...
Honestly, be careful with the aftermarket installers. We have had numerous cars in the shop for repairs that were due to a remote starter being installed and once the remote starter was removed all problems were gone...

Duh people... you don't need another sentry key! Since what your doing anyways is basically rendering the sentry useless... just get a regular copy of the key. Cut off the end of the sentry key and tape it up under the dash. I say cut it off just in case someone should find it.

DEI makes a transponder module that you can use. You would basically put it right at the SKIM's antenna to bypass it when you want the car to start. The trick with SKIM is that its ONLY used when you're starting the car. Once the car is started, SKIM doesnt do anything more. The way the DEI module works is that it turns ON only to start the car, once its running, the skim module shuts down and your car is safe again. this will prevent the car from starting if someone breaks in, but still be able to be remote started.

i have an 02 r/t with sentry i have them remote start module the does not take the key and basicly i may tip off soe crooks but it is still more vonorable than the key setup cause if you got the manual trans all you got to do is start it with the parking brake on and nomatter how you wire it through your car it will start with a non sentry key and i did not cheap out on the alarm/starter it cost about 800 installed and that was dealer price on top compustar
parts (labour extra) ps if you are canadian check out staub dist. they are the wholesaler

You can start you sentry key car without a sentry key by applying the e brake...never heard that one before
