I could have sworn I had this argument way back in the day when I was boosted. I think it was said that body design, and ECU design is what determined the generation. NGC was the determining factor for seperating the 00-02 and 03-05.

Frame and/or major redesign is what bumps vehicle generation.

The 2000-2005 Neons are all PL-2s while the 1995-1999 are PLs.


There is something similar to the Monte Carlos. The fan base classifies the 78-80 as their own generation, ie 3rd Generation and the 81-88 as the 4th Generation. However, they are all G Bodies from 78-88.
