how do i figure out my gas mileage

Post by packfan88 » Wed May 08, 2013 9:39 am

I have been collecting receipts since i first got the car and this is where Im at. I tried to do x amount with 91/93 and x amoutn with 89 but sometimes i forgot.
mileage + gallons
60140 9.962 gallons
60281 5.822
xx,xxx 5.902
60492 8.605
60648 3.365
60907 5.267
60987 7.500
61232 2.504
61292 10.148
61327 1.513
61531 7.601
61699 6.177

74.366 gallons used

So now do i factor this once my tank is empty since I started out with a full tank and am not on empty to write down the mileage

I can wait for the 'ding' low fuel to come on to calculate it, but how much approx fuel is remainign when that happens?

As of righ tnow it looks like 1559 miles traveled so 1559/74.366=20.96 mpg

If i get this correct i can remove the last amoutn of gas (6.177) and that will bring me back to a full tank but i keep the mileage.
1559/68.189 =22.86 mpg
That assumes i was out of fuel when i filled up last.

I can make this easy. I will need fuel on the way home. I can either fill up at the ding, fill up when i think im about totally out or fill wup when ever.

How do i do it?

Do you have a smartphone? Search for an app called Road Trip, it will help you keep track of gas mileage, plus a lot more.

I've been using this app for the past 30k miles for both cars. Takes all the guess work out of it.

Back to the first post.

You begin by filling the tank. Don't use this first fill as part of the equation.

Travel X amount of miles, and add more fuel. You then record the miles driven, and the amount of fuel put in. It doesn't need to be an exact amount.

Then just keep track of each value, for as long as you wish.

So basically from the info provided, the 60140 was the beginning mileage. The 9.962 gallons is not used in the equation. It was only added, so you could travel to the next fill up, and record those miles traveled.

Any idea when the ding and light comes on? Today I squeezed 11.5 gallons in the tank. What size tank does a 2002 have?

If you have the non tach cluster, you may not have the low fuel warning. My '01 ES did not have it until I installed a tach cluster.

Fuel tank is 12 gallons, plus what you can squeeze into the filler neck.

It depends on how accurate your sender unit is.

The cluster determines when to set the alarm, based on the gauge reading via the PCI bus. There is no separate wire to the FP module for the low fuel warning.

While the PCI bus does not determine gauge position, like all the other gauges in the cluster, it does communicate the fuel level with the cluster board, and the PCM.

Generally around an eighth of a tank or less will turn on the light and chime. It should then eventually begin flashing the low fuel light as it gets closer to "E".

I just reset my trip odometre everytime I fill up. Tells me EXACTLY how much gas for how many km. Really simple........ have a notepad in my glovebox to keep track of it all

That's exactly what I do, use my trip meter. Fill my tank, I don't do any extra clicks anymore (to make it an even dollar amount). Take the amount of gallons, divide it by my trip reading, and reset my trip. I get about 28-29 mostly highway... Which I feel like it should be more.
