test of various penetrating oils

Post by gtxtreme19 » Mon Sep 09, 2013 9:36 pm

Not my info I copied from another forum that I've been on a few years. I figured with some of the debating that goes on about wd-40 and pb blaster this could help. I've been using the atf/acetone for some time and its awesome. If you use the right fingernail polish remover it even smells prettier than atf

"The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Mighty interesting results for simple acetone and tranny fluid!Penetrating oil .
Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
None ................. 516 pounds .
WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10
The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."

Ohhhhh perfect! I just called to order some new parts for my coil overs and they said they stopped using the pieces and suggested penetrating oil instead. Never heard of the stuff before but this gives me a good lead! Thanks!!

That's a tough one to simulate, how do get everything to rust at the same rate!

I've heard of similar results with an ATF-Diesel mix as well.

That's what I thought too, how do they get the same test 100% every time. There has to be some way to measure rust factor, but I don't know. I've been using atf/ acetone since I read this, today I got the forks and pistons out of my 77 Honda cb750 with the mix where 2 weeks worth of soaking in marvel mystery oil didn't help. I also have a seized 413 soaking to get pistons and crank out. I like it, but that's just one opinion

^ i thought that one over in my head for a while and i'm willing to bet its an average of so many they do using the same penetrating fluid. so even though it probably varies, if the average is lower, thats the better fluid

Sorry for the ridiculous question, but which ATF is most suitable for this?

Our ATF+4? Dex? Mercon?
2001 Chrysler Neon LX (like 2002 US models with the 4 speed ATX)

Whichever atf is sitting in your garage. I've used most of them and even some really dirty used atf and all worked about the same
