lowering spring rattle

Post by half_twisted » Wed Feb 08, 2006 1:01 am

my progress 1.8 lowering springs have been on my car for about 2 years and the just today i started to notice a rattle comming from the front suspension. i know its the springs cuz it only happends when i drive over a bad road or the lil bumps that make up a lane in the road. when i swaped the springs i noticed that the rubber bushings that the stock springs sat on where very worne so im assuming that by now theyre probably gone.. is the rattleing normal for lowering springs.. could my struts be blown.

by vibrating do you mean like a clank clank noise? or like how metal rapidly vibrating against metal would sound type of vibrating?

It's probably your outer tie rod ends. Unless you've had them replaced. If they are still original, they're probably all loosey-goosey by now, and making that sound. I just had mine replaced 10 days ago, and boy, did it make a difference. Whole front of the car is more solid, and alot of the bad noises are gone. :) You can check them real easy by just grabbing them and trying to move them up and down, or side to side. If they move AT ALL, they need to be replaced.

ever since i dropped my car the first time (on srt springs) my car has made that noise. now its even more apparent with the ultra-stiff suspension and solid motor mounts

not trying to thread hi-jack but I ordered a Tokico package that came with struts and springs, I was wondering since I will be taking everything off should I get some new parts like bushings? So I don't run into a problem like you guys did.

If its just rattling, and the driveability of the car hasn't changed, then yes, it would more the likely be the bushings.

If your car seems to wander more on the road, or seems to have excess roll in the corners, then it could be one of the above

everythng seems normal. only thing is that metel hits metal rattling happends when the wheel hits a bump and bounces.. so something is loose..
lugs are tight i just checked the front brakes cuz i changed pads and retouched up the red paint on the calipers and nothing seemed bad. i knwo the ball joints are making noise when i turn cuz the bushing is torn.. the tie rod also seems fine but ill have to take a second look.

if it is a clank clank when you go over the bump it is a possibility of the spring hitting against itself as it compesses down from the bump
