OEM Mopar manually retractable antenna on eBay

Post by moe8555 » Thu Jan 09, 2014 4:38 am

Hi folks,
There's a seller in Germany that is selling new OEM Mopar manually retractable antennas. Part number 4793962AC (Chrysler export only).

I ordered one yesterday to replace my broken mast. He's selling for only 15 Euros! (They wanted $95 at Chrysler Israel).

It says shipping to Germany only, but I contacted him and he agreed to ship here for an additional 9 Euros.

Here's the link for whoever wants in: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 1421121176

there's a pic in the listing.

Might be cheaper to get it from a local US dealer, if they are available...

Bill,
I did some checking around before buying from the German.

Nobody seemed to actually have it in stock in the US despite it appearing for sale on parts sites.

This is a reply I got from allmoparparts.com:
Hello,
We regret to inform you that the parts you requested are export parts and
are not available to us. The part you are looking for is of the export
market. To obtain this item you will have to refer to an export
dealership. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Thanks for your inquiry, Mike D.
WE DO NOT SELL THIS PART.
PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS E-MAIL.

Yeah, I figured it was probably the case, thus the bold type "if".

Seems they list a lot of stuff that is no longer available lately. Or price it at a redikerous price so you won't even consider purchasing it.

Like the correct o-ring for the pre 2003 water pump inlet tubes. The o-ring cost as much (or more) as buying the updated tube. Imagine that.

So which one of you bought it???

Until I posted about it here, there were no watchers and nobody had looked at the listing.

A short time after posting, there were 3 watchers. And now it's sold...

That is just the antenna and not the mechanical part that sits in the fender. That is just to replace a broken antenna.
I am pretty sure you will need more to make it work!!!
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Antennensockel-A ... 4617d6f4de

No one in the german board tried to install a motor antenna.

And i will never understand why your stupid dealership does not sell export parts to you. that is just ridiculous!

Ask Gnuserup, he parted many Neons and i guess he has some antennas flying around.

Wow good call!

I hadn't even thought of that because this kind of antenna is stock on my car and I just need the mast!

Fortunately somebody is selling that too :-)

Better grab it before it's gone!! (Nice touch that the part is Made in USA and not Made in China like the fixed antenna is these days)

Thanks for pointing that out. I went ahead and bought it so that I won't have an antenna that I can't use.

Yes, I was happy to see that both the antenna and cable are American-made.

Still waiting for the antenna and cable to arrive- should be in my post office box any day now. I took copies of the seller's pictures to the dealership today and the service manager quoted a labor price of between $100 and $110! I'm wondering if this is something that could be installed with my new tool kit and the collective thinking of everyone at one of the upcoming meets...

Shouldn't be too bad. The one end of the plug is the standard Motorola antenna plug from what I see in that picture. The current antenna should twist off counter clockwise at the base.

Considering that's give or take an hours worth of labor charge, probably a fair price.

The wheel has to come off, the fender liner at least pulled back to get to the lower mount, and then the cable pulled out of the interior, the new one put back in, hooked up, the fender liner and wheel put back on.

I can't recall if they used an extension, or if the cable goes all the way to the HU. If it goes all the way to the HU, the HVAC bezel and radio need pulled too.

I'm still waiting for the mast to arrive too.

Did he send it with a tracking number to you? He claimed that there was no reasonably priced option with tracking, even though I sent him a link from the Germany Post site showing him that there is.

My dealer quoted me $20 labor to replace just the mast, but I'm going to do it myself anyway.

Here, an hour's labor at the dealer runs about $65-$75.

That's what I figured. Oh well, another hit to the savings account.

No, no tracking number. I'm not quite in the middle of Ebay's estimated shipping times so I'll give it a few more days before I contact the seller.

I got the note today that the package can be picked up tomorrow!

He actually sent it registered mail with a tracking number. No clue why he didn't update me even after I asked...

Looks like I got a project for the weekend!!

I'll let you know if it's how it appears in the picture.

Cable arrived Tuesday which is odd since the antenna was shipped first. I sent the seller a message via Ebay, asking for a tracking number for the antenna- he replied that he sent it regular post so no number. I checked my post office box again tonight (Wednesday) but still nothing. I hope that I don't have to contact the postmaster to do a trace on the package. :banghead:

I wouldn't worry. That's pretty good time coming from Europe. Just think how much closer I am and mine came only a day or two before.

Give it another week, tops.

I just haven't had time to collect the package from the post office, but tomorrow morning I'll get it so I can install this weekend.

Why don't you just remove the antenna and use something else? Window antenna?

I like using OEM Mopar parts and this particular part has intrigued me since it is BUX and unavailable here. I rarely listen to the radio but I could pull up the antenna when needed; otherwise, it would be lowered and out of sight for a cleaner look. I don't want a plastic plug in the fender nor do I want an aftermarket shorty antenna.

Well, I tried replacing the mast yesterday and just couldn't figure the damn thing out. I can't believe it!!!

I removed the fender splash shield, no problem!

Then I used the antenna wrench and tried to remove that weird nut on the antenna base but nothing would unscrew. Everything spun together. I can't even figure out how to pop the whole base off the fender.

I applied force on the antenna from inside the fender and tried to hold the antenna in place as I unscrewed the nut, but still nothing.

I used the Chilton guide, searched the web, and even found the chapter in the FSM.

Any ideas? Is there some other screw somewhere else that I have to remove, maybe in the fender? I feel like I'm missing something....

The price for the "mast" is quit good. But sure only if it arrives

Unfortunatelly the mast seems to be one the most popular things to be broken by stupid passersby.
I actually have no mast left - sorry.

All the spare Neons I have have broken masts :(

moe8555, you may need some penetrating oil, and locking pliers to hold the base, then try get the nut out of the base. The locking tab may have corroded off the base, so it is just spinning in the hole. Probably need to mask the area off, and put some paint on both sides of the fender, if it has torn up the paint.

Not sure on humidity there, but here, the rust would do it's work, and the antenna would fall through the fender.

Thanks for the tip!
No worries about rust here: no snow, no salt. I really don't have a spot of rust anywhere on the car and the paint is still original according to the previous owner and what I can tell.

The locking tab: is it that little thing sticking out on the bottom of the base, inside the fender? It's like a little tab that can be pressed like a spring and spun a little. I'm talking about the piece that's right on top of the base up top inside the fender.

I tried holding it with my hands and spinning the nut... I opened the hood and took off that black guard that sits on the windshield so I could get my hand in there and a light.

When you say hold the base, where exactly? The top part, the plastic base sitting on the fender? Or the inside part of the base, the bulge sitting just under the surface of the fender?
