2001 Neon Steering Column Wont click in?

Post by cmunn95 » Tue Jul 08, 2014 12:58 am

Hey guys, so recently just noticed that the right side of my steering column sits lower than the left. Tried raising it up and it almost seems like something may be broken in there! whats my best course of action to take with this?

I would take a look under there to check for broken welds. (or missing nuts) If there are any, you could remove the column and have it repaired.

There is a prper way to reinstall it when connecting the u joint at the bottom, so check back, if removal/install is going to be performed.

Pop the panel off and take a peek in there. Some 13mm, I believe, nuts hold it on and "square" and as OD said the u-joint should really only go on one way.

If you do disconnect that ujoint, DO NOT turn the wheel. If the wheel does get turned and not put back to where it was, the clockspring will get broken. The clockspring is basically a tape with the wires in it, turn the wheel and not put it back on center, when it gets turned to full lock in one direction, the tape will reach it's end and break. When the clockspring breaks, you will lose the airbag, horn, and the cruise control, if equipped.
There are four nuts that hold the column to the dash frame.
