Going to buy a Neon... but choices...
Hiya all ya Neon owners out here...
I'm looking into selling my 2004 Ford Minivan and see if I can pick up a used Srt4, or a Sxt, either of those with a manual transmission.
I have had one Neon SXT back in 2006, but had it repo'd after I got hurt at work in 2007. My wife had a 1996 Neon coupe, with a 5 speed when I met her in 2001. We sadly traded that car when we married, in 2003.
I wanted to ask what the better choice would be for me and my family...
I'm looking to either buy a used srt4 or get a decent SXT for a good bit less, and add a turbo to it later.
The budget I will have will be approx $4,000 if I can sell the van, or maybe trade for a srt4 dead even.
Which sounds best for the $4,000 budget? Get a used and probably badly abused Srt4 for that much, or buy a SXT and gather parts for a 2.0 liter turbo, with a new manifold, turbo, and parts from Craigslist?
My wife does like the SRT4 as our neighbor has one, and she loves the exhaust note. It was her idea we try to get a Neon, but within our budget of course.
One note, I live in an apartment complex, so I am unable to work on the 2.0 litre Neon in the parking lot, would a Neon owner help with the turbo project install if it came to it?
Just wondered....
Thank you all... and I'll try to reply to each response.

Few more questions...
Thank you for the fast replies already.
Just a few more quick questions...
Since I'll be turbo'ing on a very strict budget, which turbo's would be best for the 2.0 Neon, (an example, if I got a 2003-ish SXT with a 5 speed. )
Do I have to go with only an Srt4 Turbo parts from the Neon / Caliber, or can I use one from the 80's-90's Dodges like the Omni, The Charger, or even a minivan?
(I did have a Plymouth Voyager turbo minivan 2 years ago, but I was broke and I couldn't fix the rear wheel tube housing, it's in my Youtube)
My main concern is hoping the turbo will still be street legal, and fine with emissions as this will be the daily driver?
I'm not after a 500 horsepower monster, (YET) I just want the turbo kick, and the burbling srt4 exhaust on a SXT.
I'd hate to do these mods, and have the inspection station tell me, "Sorry, you modded this car and according to the Vin, this should be a stock 4 cylinder. Sucks to be you... "
A list of parts needed also for the swap, and prices (ballpark? used btw)
Thanks again...

About the only way you would pass emissions would be to SRT swap it using a complete donor car.
You may still pass using all the srt stuff, and cylinder head bolted to the 2.0, but you may need to downsize the injectors, and/or have the SRT pcm recalibrated a little. There are a few members that may still do this, a dealer will not.
Unfortunately, just buying an SRT would be the easiest route here.
If visual inspection is not too detailed, you use a reprogrammed SRT pcm, the 2.0 is '03 newer, and they mainly rely on the OBD port in your area, passing emissions isn't totally impossible. But you would need a pretty quiet muffler, and a bit of luck.

Eeek...! Wow...
So this does change things a bit.
I may still try to get a SXT, but do things a lot slower.
I'll ask a local mechanic about the emissions laws here in Pa. (Chester County, Oxford btw) And about swapping an entire powertrain from the srt4, the Pt Gt Cruiser is the same 2.4 engine, except the heads and intake I think?
Believe me, I'd go the cheapest, but well planned route I can, as long as wife says it's ok. (Like I said, she likes Srt4's as much as me. )
Think I will start piecing together the parts after I buy the Neon which may be in a month or 2.
Thank you again everyone for the advice, and apologies again for all the questions, It's just I never tried this before.
I'll be reading a LOT more in the Forced Induction forum for the 2.0 untill I can afford to piece together a good srt4 motor later.

A full swap from a donor would be federal smog legal. Swapping into an '03 to '05 would mainly only need the engine bay stuff. Most if not all of the body wiring is the same. You would just need to swap the SKIM and ignition stuff, or have SKIM disabled.Kimonoskunk wrote: I'll ask a local mechanic about the emissions laws here in Pa. The States pretty much have to pass a Federally legal swap.

The 2.4L turbo engine from the SRT-4 versus the one found in a PT Cruiser GT has only one difference: the intake. That's it! I'm not sure if external accessories are exactly the same, but there's a good chance they are. Switching the intake manifold along with the throttle body (reuse the injectors from the PT engine) will allow you to install the 2.4L turbo from a PT into a Neon.

This also, I guess I should have expanded the year range on the engines. Not sure if they offered PT's with boost all the way to 2010 tho.
A little searching...

In our dreams. Only a very few early turbo engines got a forged crank, and to my knowledge, none had an aluminum block in production. The engine is upgraded over the standard PT with improved cooling, oiling, an aluminum cylinder block with steel sleeves, and forged internals.
So all the way to 2009 for donors. There may be a few of the new short blocks still for sale from Mopar also. I believe LownSlow bought one for his "at the time" SRT.Edmunds wrote: For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Re: Few more questions...
Get the car inspected, THEN turbo it. Luckily for me, my state is very relaxed on inspections. Considering i had a fully built and supercharged 302 out of a 5.0 in a beemer, all they said was "neat" and slapped a sticker on it. lolKimonoskunk wrote:Thank you for the fast replies already.

Bi annual inspections (in most cases) for emissions/and or missing defective parts, is more what they are concerned with.
Ohio only does a one time inspection for new "out of state" purchases. Then it is by county on bi annual emissions testing.
Every state has it's quirks, or lack thereof....
