2002 neon charging issue

Post by iceman35 » Fri Oct 03, 2014 8:08 pm

ive replaced the alternator, the battery and i ran my own 8 gauge wire from the alternator to te starter, and added in the fusible link. car still has the battery light come on after about 5 minutes of driving.....
i ran my own 8 gauge wire because the original was all hacked up by previous owner.
i also swapped out the sensor in the elbow of the airbox with no change. this car does not have the battery temp sensor either so that cant be the issue.....what else could i be missing??

i did some searching and came across a post where the asd relay controls the alt field, amongst other stuff, so i went and swapped the asd relay for the horn relay. had the car running for about 15 minutes with headlights on and radio on and no more battery light. I turned the lights and radio off but while the car was still running i checked the voltage at the battery terminals and it was a constant 13.75 volts!

The engine would also not run if the ASD relay was bad. (Provided it is still wired like it came from the factory.)

The PCM controls the alternator field, the ASD relay only provides power to the field, via the DG/OR wire. That wire also supplies power to the injectors and coils.

If the other wire on the field connector does not have good continuity all the way to the PCM, it may not charge/randomly charge.

If it was grounded, it would charge at 100% of what it could for the RPM the alternator was spinning. It would go over 14 volts. Possibly higher than 15 volts, depending on the condition of the battery.
