ive heard that a couple of people have had some serious problems with the UDP messing stuff up, and i wanted to get some feedback from those of you who have them for awhile (the more miles the better). any major OR minor probs? also, what does the install consist of? sorry i know these questions have been around before but im no good with the search button lol.

what do you consider serious?
the problems that have been experienced are only on 02s and i think only r/ts.

nobody has really had a UDP for an extended period of time... say more than 50k miles (i don't think)

me personally, the UDP might cause damage, but its gonna take a whole lot of mileage (i'm thinking 100k) to do some serious damage, and by then you'll be conserned with other stuff going wrong with the car. By then might be good time to start looking into the srt swap.

by the way... you might wanna fix the title

LoL - Yeah - whats a UPD ?

As far as problems- The only problems ive read about is the 02 R/T's (the CEL)

there have been people screw things up during the installation . . . . .But if you do it right - no worried there

I wish My R/T wouldnt throw a CEL or i would buy one . . .

Now I did hear that some1 with I think a srt had the motor blow and they blamed it on the udp. But I can not remember exactly what happened. maybe some1 will be able to tell us lol.

I've had my UDP for well over 50K. (I'm just breaking 101,000 today :D ) Its Mpx, easy ass install, and my car is an 01 w/Magnum SOHC. Its never even flinched.

Well....any more than the usual piston slap, noisy ass injectors, noisy tensioner pulleys, and intermittant idle seizures. All of which happened the day I brought it home at mile 16 anyway. :D

Like Knoxville said though, I've heard some urban legends and such about people's cars really getting F'd up by cheap sweatshop UDP's. If you choose to buy one, check it out. Mic it to make sure its not warped. Or put a nice level on its surface and look for gaps or bad machining. Failures may have more to do with bad crank bearings than the UDP. Thats why its kinda' urban legend, there are too many other componants in that area of teh motor that can take a motor out pretty easily.

thanks guys sounds like i should be just fine with a mpx or UR udp then. how about some install info? do the belts have to be put on just right? what are techniques for making sure timing is correct? im a noob when it comes to belts and pulleys, thanks again

The instructions included with the package are very concise for the Mpx. I am unsure about Unorthodox products.
My advise is that hot parts go on much easier than cold ones. As far as timing, I didn't need to worry much and neither should you as long as you don't move your crank. The pulley should slide on and off without an rotation of your cams or crank.

As far as installation goes - Ive seen a few how to's floating around

Youll wanna rent a 3 jaw pulley from teh auto store or something

As far as belts go - If you order from modern - the MPx comes with belts . . . as far as "putting them on just right" - Just drive with them on for acouple hunred miles then readjust and make sure the belts are tight . . . .

Some people have even put the pulleys in the oven to allow it to go on easier . . .

Yeah, the oven thing is in the instructions. Good point about the belts. I don't think Unorthodox come with belts. (unsure)

oven huh? wouldnt it be kinda hard to install if its 200 degrees? haha oh and im pretty sure UR comes with belts grambo

My thoughts to . . . but I guess if your using mechanics gloves it doesnt matter

ADD: The UR DOES come with belts (if ordered from modern)

Just use some gloves OB

And the UR pully does come with belts NOW. Back when Grambo bought his Mpx the UR did not include belts.

Got the MPx myself. No need to throw it in the oven! Just put on the anti-seize (some say not to, i see no reason not to!), put on the UDP, tap it with a rubber mallet till the bolt will thread a good turn, then use air tools to bolt it back on. Takes very little time to put on this way. I wouldnt want to mess with a burning hot peice of aluminum myself.

I had a Megan Racing UDP
Installation wasn't to bad as long as you have air tools, we had to bake it, I had a desiel machanice helping me, he does crank shaft pullys all the time on Big rigs.
I really didnt see an astonding gain like people make it out to be, Gas milage went up for about a tank and a half, then droped back down to near poo levels... Shortly before I trader her off my belt started to squeek during takeoff... Oh well dealerships probelm now.

I got the MPx UDP and had a shop install it for $35 (I didn't have the right tools and didn't want to mess with it). After 2-3 months I had to tighten the belt as it would slip in the AM when it was cold and damp and then be fine when it warmed up (belts stretch when they break in)

It helped the engine rev easier (more freely). CAI, UDP, and exhaust should be first upgrades!

x2..I had one for a fleeting moment, had to send it back due to some personal stuff, but it looked like it was made very well and it came w/ the belts. now if they were the right ones, I dunno...I never got to install it.

I've had my AF/X UDP on for 70,000 miles give or take a few. Car runs fine. Only issue I've even had is a couple of times in a drive thru with the heat or A/C on high, head lights on wipers on full time. Stereo (which includes 2 12"subs) above 20. My battery light will come on. Rev it a lil bit or turn some stuff down/off battery light goes out and all is well again. Also have had it come in when sitting on 495 around DC with everything on.

We heated my up in the over and used a Impact and raw hide mallet to put it on. Taking the stock one off always seemed to be the bigger issue in the 4 I've done/helped with.

I have personally used and installed the AF/X pulley and it seems to show no problems. For install i used a protable propane torch to heat it that way i didn't have to make the mad dash from house to the garage since they are about 200 ft apart. Also heating the old one when removing it can help. just have to use care so you don't melt any seals.
I say get a UDP it's worth the gains. 8)
