A friend of mine bought an 05 Neon SXT ATX last month (just like mine except it's white lol) and unfortunatly he hit another car with the front bumper of the driver's side... No real damage, except slight fender damage, the plastic black part of the headlight broke, and the driver's side turn signal broke. Nothing all that serious. Today, he bought a new headlight, bought new turn signal bulbs, and I helped him replace the fender. Well, when we were replacing the fender we saw that the resonator broke too.
BIG hole in the resonator box and the broken pieces were inside the box, too. He wants to replace the resonator now but I told him "No dude! This is great in a way! I hear having no resonator is like having a CAI. You'll get a few more horses." He was like "cool". So we started the Neon after we finished with everything and took out the resonator. The engine roars a little louder now, which is normal but cool. But now we hear a couple of "pops" when he steps on the gas. We haven't tried driving the car yet, we've only stepped on the gas while it's in park, cuz we're kinda worried about this. Is this normal with having no resonator.

The intake shouldtn pop at all, and if its the motor popping you might be in some trouble. could the intake have sucked in a piece or two of the broken resonator perhaps? the exhaust is known to pop quite a bit on neons, but not stock. to answer your question more simply, removing the res should NOT cause any popping sounds whatsoever to my knowledge.

Well the accident happened about half an hour away and nothing got sucked into it before. No pop or nothing, not even when we WOT'd it in his driveway after getting to his house. It only made the noise after. I doubt anything got sucked in now. Maybe it sorta backfires cuz now the resonator is gone and it's getting more air??? I'm still pretty darn new at this "car" thing so that's my guess.
Anyone else might now why? Thanks a bundle, naranjablastsxt

hmm... it sounds like what my car does, but i have an SRT-4 Exhaust setup... 2 resonators on the midpipe and no muffler on the tips... the crackling popping noise soudns like what my car does when i drive and let off teh gas, because the neon runs rich on fuel, and the extra fuel that is let out thru the exhaust is burnt up in the catalytic converter. Im not sure if this helps any, but if his exhaust is stock with the muffler, then he sholdnt be having any of the popping/crackling noises, because the muffler is supposed to block that. Might want to take it by the dealership explain whats happening and see what they say bout it.

Backfires sound like a gunshot... and most likely can he beard inside the car. When extra fuel burns in the cat, and makes the popping/crackling noise, with the muffler on you almost never hear it in the car, with a setup like i have, just the srt-4 exhaust, and on some after market setups, you can hear the popping and crackling inside the car as well as outside. But, its good that hes taking it to the dealership, let us know what was wrong

The poping sound is normal......It is just a little gas rumbling around in the cat and echoing out your muffler. Probably since you have the res off now you are getting a little more air in turn the computer will give a little more fuel to compansate. You dont need to bring it in to the dealer what you guy's need to do is enjoy the sound and know that you have a great exhaust strait from the factory.
