im stumped....

Post by refect » Tue May 09, 2006 12:42 am

ok so i dont really know what could be wrong here, but here is the problem. well it's 2 problems, but im not sure if one is causing the other...anyways, whenever i make a right turn or turn the wheel to the right all the way or almost all the way, i hear this grinding/rubbing on something noise on the driver side. this only happens when it is in gear. if i take it out of gear it doesnt make the noise and i dont feel it grinding or rubbing on a right turn. then on top of that when my car hits 80mph the shit vibrates like crazy. steeringwheel, whole floor, car, everything...you can feel it and even see it everywhere. seems to really do it when it is in gear and only when i get to the 80-90mph range just cruising. sometimes it does it hard sometimes it doesnt really do it and sometimes it does it very minimal.....now ive checked the hub bolt...tight..checked crossmember bolts...all tight....steering arms have no play and are tight....i just had new bearings installed and new tires mounted and balanced....also just had an alignment done....i really dont know wat could be causing these 2 things....any ideas?

at first i was gonna say check the PS pump and accessories, and since u checked everythings else, maybe the steering knuckle? as far as the vib over 80, doubt its related but who knows, thats not good at all tho good luck. anyone else have any ideas?

btw turning the wheel all the way one way or the other is big NO NO in case u didnt know that. #1 way to ruin a PS pump, thats what all the ruckus is when any car is turned full left or right. if u have to do it, dont hold it for more than 4-5 seconds max.

brand new steering knuckle straight from the dealer....and yeh the vibrating only really does it at like 80mph or till about 90mph....now call me crazy or an idiot if you want i could care less, but the car drives real smooth at 140........all the vibration and stuff is gone. which is why i dont understand how it does it at only like 80-90mph and when just cruising..as for the grinding on the right turn. only thing i could think of is a bad bearing, but i just had them things replaced brand new with my steering knuckles at the dealer. it pisses me off

oh yeah DUH u told me that like a month ago haha sorry. id look into the PS pump just for good measure, then if thats 100% ok we'll have to look deeper. that vibration is puzzling me... check ALL suspension components in detail? it has to be something...

YOu just had new tires and bearings put in right? How long ago was that? Cause all this sounds like a problem relating to that. From experience.... I've balanced my tires and missed the balance mark by an inch..... AN INCH and I thought I was going to be thrown out the window at 65mph. Vibration was horrible. So I'm guessing that the vibration is linked to the tires. I'd take it back to that shop and explain it to them..... see what they say.

^^^
Thats the cheapest guess, go have them rebalanced

Otherwise its probably a bad bearing or axle...

see im thinking that the grinding/rubbing sound that i sometiems hear on a right turn, but mainly when i am moving slow and turn the wheel to the right quite a bit is from a bad bearing or possibly axel related. but i dont see how it can be bearing or axel related because it only seems to do it when the car is in gear...the axels were brand new mopar axels as well as the bearing and steering knuckle...now the vibrating i wanna say it is form unbalanced tires, but i just noticed today it was doing it very minimal. then at one point it wasnt doing it at all. then i drove the car again and it did it like crazy. it only seems to do it right when i hit close or at that 80mph mark too. i had a set of tires on that were fairly new and it was doing it. switched those to the back and had another new set of 2 tires put on in the front like a week ago and it still did it. man im clueless on wat could be causing this.

edit: the vibration will get so bad at times that you can feel it in the floor and see the dash like shaking if you stare at it. im nto talkin like dash vibrating making noise type of thing. i mean like you can see it jumping around with the car itself.

You are rolling on like 18's right? I think you need some centric hub rings. That might fix it.

I bet you have something in your drive train that is creating resonance. The way I usually chase down vibes in cars is to jack the power side of the car up(in this case front) and with the tires off the ground just throw it in drive. This really takes two people, one to hit the gas and brake(dont throw your tranny into park like I did) and one person to go around with a metal rod and a good pair of eyes and ears to see where it might be coming from. Try it with the tires on and off and dont rev to high. Since your having a grinding noise when you make a right turn and getting resonance at 80-90 Im guessing its a bent or unbalanced axle. If you really want to go hardcore. Get an oscilliscope and some accelerometers and place them at different points on the car. The you should staticaly be able to find the source of the vibration. But I would try the first method first.
