Best tires for stock 7-spokers

Post by Nick Drake » Thu May 25, 2006 1:34 pm

Hey I'm about to move real far away so I'm gonna bite the bullet and get some new tires before I really need them, besides, Sears always has their memorial day weekend tire sale now.

So what are some things to look for if I want all-season tires. I'm not gonna be able to afford a new set of tires for the winter so I want some tires that can handle snow too.

Any ideas/brands?

Also, I don't know what to ask for when I go in  heh. Do I just say the kind of car I have? or is there a size I should ask for?

Thanks TONS.

oh i don't know if this matters, but i'm on the 7-spokers, not steelies.

205/55/15. Unfortunately, any 15", near stock diameter, Neon tire creates a less than average size = more expensive tire & less options.

If you search, you'll find people praising Falkens, BFG Traction TAs, Yokos, etc.

wait the stock 6" wide wheel can run a 205? I thought 195 was max. holy cow is 215 possible too? no way. :?

I'm running these:

Mine are 195/55VR15 and they KICK ASS for the price. I had them on the same rims as yours before I bought my snowflakes. (same size)

i got the snowflakes, arent the two wheels identical minus the actual inner design tho (i mean size wise)? so could i really get away with a 205 on the stock 15"?

Yep. I'll say this... my winter tires are leftover 205/60R15's off of my Daytona. Even with a 1.8" drop, these things don't rub anywhere. 205 with a smaller profile will certainly be fine.

I run 205/55/15 on mine, no problems - I think 205 is max, not 215, unless someone is actually running them... btw, I love the traction on the wider tires.

Easy on the comments....

The wider tire will fit, the side walls will just bulge out kinda looking like a wide wrinkle wall racing slick but without the wrinkle...
Here is a lil link to kinda explain it more technically....

Awesome, so its actually 100% safe to run a 205 on the stock 15's? i wont have excessive air loss or anything with such a wide tire? thats amazing i had no idea.

neonpla: are u serious thats huge. are u running that wide of a tire? makes me really think twice about getting big wheels, i thought that only wider tires could fit on big wheels, but i think im gonna try to find some 16X7" or maybe 17X7" if theyre light enough.

ps have any neon owners successfuly rolled their fender to allow a wider wheel/offset? I heard its possible to do it with a bat or a piece of wood, and just pry them out. Seems like a cheap and simple way to allow the wheel/tire combo to be flush with the fender (and much wider) instead of tucking what seems to be a MAX of 225 with the stock space. just a thought..

If you are shopping at Sears, get the BFG Traction T/A tires. I run 195/60 15s. All season goodness but still good wet and dry traction.

I like my Falken 512's (also available at Sears) but depending on how much snow you plan on encountering, you might not like them. They do very well for a high performance tire in the snow. But, they are hardly a regular all season.

Also, keep in mind that a wider tire is not as good in the snow. Skinnier is better. Stock size tire is 185/65. Going to a 195/60 is a good choice for a Neon. A bit more width, a bit lower and it still fills the fender wells ok.

I need all weather tires for dry and rain with max grip. no snow in CA! well at least not in my area. ive heard good things about the 512s are they safe in the rain? anything I get has to at least do better in the rain than the crap stockers, but dry grip and treadlife are also top priority! im thinkin a 205 would be awesome on the stock wheels i thought id have to go with no more than 195's for sure, but the wider the better!

there is no need to roll the fenders... unless your slamed. if you look around, the average drop is slightly above the tires and with the stiffer springs... i doubt the tire will go into the wheel well.

wouldnt a rolled fender allow for a more neg offset and in turn allow wider wheels and tires while keeping the same suspension component clearance? even 225 is nothing compared to most performance cars runnin around today, though we dont need much more than that w/o high power. im thinkin for the future (as usual), cuz i plan on having quite a bit more power under the hood and some 235-245 tires would be usuful. just wondering if anyones done something like that yet.

you can run the 205 in either 205/55 or the 205/50.

people get the 55 to fill the wheel well a little more.

if you want to run the 235-245 tire, i believe you would have to get coilovers or the srt struts. the perch on yours is too low. You might be able to do it, but it would be on what I cal rubberband tires(30-35 sidewall)

Do u think it would work with Tokico HP struts? Those are what i plan to get, and im sure theyre designed to have just as much (if not more) clearance than srt struts. anyways, thats not in the cards for quite a long time, so back on topic. these tire discussions are always cool cuz i need some ideas about what tires to get and all the specs, so please keep the ideas coming; what are u guys runnin on stock 15's?

i currently have 185/60/15 yokohama avid TRZ, and have had them for ~15000 miles. they are amazing tires. great wet and dry traction. great price too. i think they were ~$50 each from tirerack.com. i spent a total of ~$310 on the entire set, mounting & balencing, shipping and the actual tires. imo it is a great tire in the stock size, they blow away the stock eagle LS by miles.

MAN those stock eagle's were absolutely terrible in snow.

and in the rain and dry. they were just overall shitty tires. i wish dodge never put those tires on our cars. mine were completely shot after 35000 miles. my TRZ's have hardly any wear on them after ~15000 miles. they have an 80000 mile warrenty and i think they will hit 80000 miles or atleast come very close. i dont know how yokohama does it, great traction and great wear, it just amazing. i also loved the avid s/t's that i have on my monte ss. amazing grip and i burned them up a few times and they still have good tread left after ~10000 miles. A+ to yokohama from me, thats for sure. any tire i buy from here on out will have yokohama as a strong consideration.
