Shift....NOW

Post by neonslg09 » Thu Jul 22, 2010 9:56 pm

Was wondering what's the ideal RPM range to shift at. I swapped to a 5spd awhile back, and hot wired the neutral safety switch to I could run the manual ECU. I recently took it to about 6800 and boy it seemed sooo much quicker [in my n/a neon lolz]

Is this normal? As in the higher rev's? I thought there was a rev limit, but maybe I was mistaken.

So with that;

Take off?
Thru the gears?

Help a newb out, thanks.

There is always a rev limit.
Stock cam? HP takes a nose dive right around 6000. Shift right after that.

MTX rpm cut is supposed to be 6750 for an unmodified pcm. ATX is 6000, IIRC. The R/T is 6780 or some undetectable difference using the factory tach. My R/T pcm appears to be at the 6750 mark, for what it's worth.

Mine tops out at 6750, I can vouch for it on a number of occasions!

Like Jeff said, shift around 6K where power falls off if you're looking to go fast. For every day shifting, I like 3K, sometimes as high as 4K if I need a little umph. The power band is somewhat small on these cars; starts around 3500 and pulls until 6000 ish. For economy driving, shift around 2500. Anything lower and you'll likely bog with any attempt at acceleration.

It seems to drop at 6000, but gains back at 6400. Stock internals, full bolt on's minus a UDP.

When I shift at 6000 into second it seems to bog? [lose power] then we I hit 5k it picks back up.

I think he's saying don't miss-shift.

I hit 7600 the other day WITHOUT EVEN REACHING REDLINE...is what I was implying...

You can shift out of 1st as high as you can, but 2nd or 3rd shift around 6300. The ECU will rev to 6750, but sometimes the momentum will carry it past that.

Yep, I can hold it till it shuts down, shift into 2nd, let the clutch back out, and chirp the tires. Inertia is a beautiful thing.

I always had an issue with my car though. WOT shifting into 2nd, I'm shifting faster than the car is coming off the rev limiter, so it bogs for a split second, and then comes back onto power.

In my SRT-4 I shift at around 5500 rpms.. any higher and it doesn't really pull as hard.

Yeah, I would say shift right around 6k. It's supposed to higher, but typically you lose some power around 6k. You might try 6,400 or 6,700 when you're not RACING, but I would play it a little safe. Especially if you haven't been dragging much.

Especially with the 3.55 shift as high as you can. Even though power starts to drop off, you'll still be making more power than at the lower rpm after you shift.
