Underhood Sound Dampener???

Hey guys...I have a weird question. My buddy keeps tryin' to convince me to rip off the black felt-cardboard thing from the underside of my hood...he says it's just a sound dampener and that it actually reflects more heat into my engine which is bad. His uncle tells me it's actually good for keeping heat off the engine because it is bouncing back and forth between engine and the hood... what the heck :? are they talking about????

well....if nothing else....its weight reduction! lol

I'd suggest you leave it on. The thing can't weigh more than 3 lbs. What is that in a 1/4 mile, .000004 seconds? It's also, more importantly, fire resistant.

Removing it is a bad idea. Not only is it fire resistant, it's put there to reflect heat and to help suffocate a fire if your engine ever catches on fire. It acts as a blanket, melts the pins that hold it up, and it drops over the engine to help put out the fire.

I say leave it.

lol@bouncing the heat wtf physics.
First gen guys have been removing it for years without issue. I don't use it.

mines been gone for months. its sound dampening/heat dampening. it keeps heat in the engine bay (not a good thing) and it keeps the motor quiet for the soccer moms (most people with neons  ). I say lose it. if youre engine catches on fire, u probably deserve to die anyways for neglecting your cars maintenance! hahaha jk  :D

You think it might protect the hood? I know how hot an engine can get and maybe if that thing is off it might fuck up your hood after a while. How much louder does it make your car OB?

Nah it aint gonna mess nothin up. srts dont even come with them and boosted motors are twice as hot as NA ones. theyre mostly to keep sound levels down, and they dont do a great job, but they make a diff. They actually prevent heat from exiting thru the hood. my car is loud for other reasons, but id say the dampener is worth about a 2% sound loss. not much at all.

^^Yeah but SRT's have hood scoops.

yes, like nick said, srt's haev a hood scoop it keeps the engine cool circulates the air and also keeps the hood cool.

I havent had one on my car in 4 years.

Plus the metal underside of the hood is a handy place to put stickers when you get them with your varrious mods.

not a bad point^

cf warps from heat? or does the clear/epoxy warp/melt? from what i understand actual cf can handle a shit load of heat, but the shit keeping it hard prob cant.

I didnt have any insulation pad on my CF hood on my old '96 for several years either. No warping, fading, or anything else.

I've had mine off for over 3 years, never had any problems. The main purpose like stated above is for deflecting sound(heat as well unfortunately). If you still have it on there keep it on there(my opinion) if there was an engine fire it would help it to not spread as quickly.

i almost caught my saturn on fire but it wasnt from a lack of maintenance...the people that installed my amp didnt use big enough power wire and it started to melt on my brake line and my fuel line....

Wow...I guess it would be safe to just let the thing stay on. Like said, it isn't going to help much if it's off. It's like 3oz Waet Redukchon, hahaha...and how much hotter could it make the engine? 10 degrees tops? Heck, I'll just add more water in my coolant.
