01 R/T VAFC II Installed... questions.

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

01 R/T VAFC II Installed... questions.

Post by 01rtgurl » Sun Jul 09, 2006 12:05 am

Ok guys, I installed the VAFC II the other day FINALLY! I had it sitting around for months!!

I wired it like someone's instructions said. However, I just did the splice things, that you put over the wire and the metal piece goes into BOTH wires you are connecting. This was temporary to make sure everything worked as it should before I soldered into my nice virgin ECU wires. My plan was to richen up the A/F mixture since my AF/X-R leaned it out (at part throttle) and to also get my R/T intake butterflies to work again.

VAFC red and red to ECU dark Blue/white
VAFC gray to ECU orange/dark blue
VAFC black to ECU black/tan
VAFC brown (1 cm closer to ECU) to ECU black/tan
VAFC green to ECU dark blue/tan
VAFC yellow to ECU dark green/red
VAFC white to ECU dark green/red (at MAP sensor)
VAFC pink to ECU brown/yellow (MVT solenoid--also has a relay connected)

I stuck it up on the dyno at work and we attempted to tune it with the wideband. We got it to be 14.8:1 part throttle... that was half of the battle! It ended up with part throttle being good and WOT being lean up top, from about 4.5k-6.5k(I'll have to scan the graph). Did I use all my points down low??

We quit tuning once we got an OK part throttle tune, mainly because we didn't know what everything should really be set at.... so...

My questions now are:

-What sensor number are you guys with the VAFC's using? Can I use the same sensor number as the guys with the SAFC's? I'm currently using what it says in the manual, 06 06. Also, number of cylinders is at 2 right now. Correct? I assume so b/c it's only connected to the one wire in the harness, and it's running fine.

-I could not hear the MVT activating. I *THINK* I set the VTEC point right, but then again, who knows... guess I didn't. Any ideas on this one? What should the High-Low and Low-High rpm activation points be set at, what has worked for people? I thought it was simple enough, but mine isn't working. Also, once I get it to open up at 5k, will that make my lean situation even worse since I have now added more air?!

-The RPMs are jumping everywhere on the VAFC. There's a 2,000 rpm sweep at whatever rpm I'm at... like it isn't getting a clear signal (very possible). I'm thinking about wiring in a tach adapter so it gets a better signal--will that work and suggestions on which adapter??

-I noticed on my way home that when I'm at WOT the VAFC is showing only 80% throttle. Was that an error in setup, like when I attemped to follow instructions and learn throttle opening??

-The throttle correction factor. Do I need to set that for the peon or is that a Honda-only thing?

I think that's all of my questions... hmm... this might get edited later.

I can't find the diagram I used, either. I have it printed, just can't find the link now! It has a white background, showing the ECU/VAFC wiring and also the relay wiring on the bottom and shows the pink wiring to it, if anyone can find it and post it up.

I know I'm going to have to unwrap those wires and solder them now....

The Vtec controller cannot be hooked up directly to the MTV's. You need to hook the vtec controller to a relay, and then have the relay activate the MTV's, you will burn out your vafc if you do it without a relay.

I wired it to the relay like someone had already done (that diagram I can't find!!)
