Iceman Painting

Post by SlvrACR » Tue Aug 29, 2006 6:25 pm

I have a red iceman that is slowly looking orange. I want to paint it black. Has anyone done this? Only thing im afraid of is the paint flaking off or it looking like shit after a year.

Probably just put a coat of primer on first. I painted all my fluid covers red and I primered them first. They still look new.

the biggest thing is prep... you gotta get it as clean as possible,, other than that the paint should stick to it fine

Hehe, I just sprayed Carb cleaner all over mine, shook it around, and sprayed it with a couple coats of red exhaust paint. Worked great. 8) I also wasn't too worried about how it would turn out, and I was in a hurry.

DO NOT SAND THE ICEMAN. Its plastic is one of those that dosent like to be sanded and it will freaking look like crap when you paint it. Its some sort of a nylon, not quite a plastic intake material. Trust me I learned the hard way. Anyway here is the result.

Yeah I don't know about sanding it. It's not smooth plastic, it's sort of textured, so you'd probably have to sand the living hell out of it to get it to look better than just leaving it as is.

I just painted mine last week. I bought a used Blue one. I first cleaned it real well. I tape the rubber grommets. I initially sprayed it with Rustoleum Flat Black (I didn't want glossy). I didn't like the looks of the Flat, so I just treated this as a primer. Next, I bought a can of Rustoleum Satin Black. I love the looks of this. Not too shiny, not too flat. I can't speak to it's longevity -- as I just did it. The Rustoleum is safe for temps below 200 degrees -- which should be way more than enough for the Iceman.

Semi-Gloss might be a little too Glossy. That's why I picked Satin. Satin is between Flat and Semi-Gloss. It's plenty shiny for me. I can get a pic with the new fews days if you'd like?

Sorry for the late reply. I had a busy holiday weekend. I took a couple pics of my painted Iceman. One is with flash. The blurry one is w/o. As stated above, it was painted with Rustoleum Satin Black.
