This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

gonna take the ebay challnge!

Post by yellowsxt23 » Thu Sep 07, 2006 1:21 pm

i am thinkin i am goona get this stuff, i will do a 3 pull dyno run, install all of these parts at once drive for a week, appox. 1 tank of gas, then do 3 more dyno runs see how much if any gains i got, what do you guys think? heres the links http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... AMEWA%3AIT http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... AMEWA%3AIT . i will run a o2 sim for nte cat since there wont be one, also will install motor any tranny poly race inserts, change all fluids to synthetic. what is the factory coolant thermostat temp, would i benefit from runnin a 160 or 180, i will be runnin water wetter also. the car is a atx so i dont expext to much but at least we will know what to expect from some of the ebay products. and from what i gather there are no pcm upgrades, i dont think i will run a mpx 60mm tb as i do not want to throw any codes. anybody wanna guess what kind of gains there will be? i say 18 hp, 21 lbs of torque at best. if anybody knows of a solution to the cel codes any throttle bodies i will run a 60mm one and port match it, but its just not worth it to me to deal with codes and f'n limp mode, i know i can do a cam swap, magnum swap, turbos nos etc. but this is my girls daily driver and she wont deal with me f'n up her car just to get a few more pony's out of it. any guidance as to any more parts i need before i start, i want to do this all at once see total before and after hp diff, oh and i already got a free flow muffler on it, so it should be 2.5 or 3 inch from the header back. thanks and i will keep you guys posted.

As for the plugs and wires the plugs will cause your car to run like shit....neons don't like platinums. Some say they work but they didn't work for me and for a bunch of people I know. I have three neons and not one they worked in. As for the others the gains will be the same or similar to other namebrand parts except these parts will not last nearly as long. As AGPturbo says...."The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of cheap price is forgotten."

Mopar Stage 3 Coilovers w/Energy Suspension Polyurethane Bushings
SRT Swap in progress
SRT is powered by an AGP 50 trim stage 4 ball bearing turbo kit
When finished will run no less then 400 HP.

That is brilliant!

Granted, cheap finds are possible, but how do you think the quality of products will be when the total package should cost $600+ and you're only paying 300?

It's just like coilovers. Yeah, maybe you'll be the one in a million that lucked out and have a set that lasts, but when coilovers are going for $50 on Ebay, when quality ones are like $900, what do you think will happen?

If you have money to spare, then go for it. But I [don't and] wouldn't.

I think this is a great idea. I mean really what's the difference between a borla header and an ebay header? the ebay one will rust out in 10 years. big deal that neon will be dead long before then. Everyone says a cold air intake is a cold air intake. I have an aem and it probably fits better than an ebay one and aem probably knows which end of the pipe to put the filter on for thier display pictures but it's still serves the same purpose. That underdrive pulley got good reviews already on this site, you just need new belts. as for the cam gear, well you probably won't see any big gains there but sport compact car got a horse or two out of it by advancing 2 degrees. I say go for it and my ricer guess is you'll get 12 horsepower 15 lb feet of tourque. Not bad for 350 bones.

Stock T-Stat temp is 195. A cooler T-stat won't do much if anything except make the car run every so slightly cooler and make your car run richer from the computer adding more fuel to try and get the car up to operating temp, that is all. It's pretty much a waste of money and you'll lower your MPG from the computer adding fuel.

And honestly don't go over 2.5" on the exhaust, even that is a little overkill for our cars with bolt ons.

For the plugs and plug wires... they're for an SRT-4 and they're one step cooler which you don't need as you aren't increasing the compression or adding a lot more oxygen to the motor to need colder in plug. As for the platinum comment above, platinums aren't good in our cars as we use a wasted spark setup. However the plugs that are listed in the auction are Iridium and people have had good luck with those in our engines.

You'll see some gains from the UDP, CAI, and Header but I don't think it'll be 18hp worth, I could be wrong through. The Cam Gear wont' get ya much other than moving the powerband up or down in the RPM range but on a stock cam I hear the cam gear still wont' get ya much if anything.

Im running a 180stat, this passed week with NORMAL driving I averaged 29.7 mpg driving back and forth from work putting 166miles on the odometer...
As for the plugs, I give another one up for the iridiums from NGK, even after running SRT-4 injectors, using an AF/X R pcm just for testing the plugs handled the richness without a problem....
