My engine has been knocking pretty loud lately. Start-up the knocking is really bad, but once the car is warm it still happens. From inside while driving I can hear the knocking slighty when accelerating, but once I get past a certain RPM it stops. Also, when I accelerate it sounds like my car is almost chirping at low RPM's while accelerating. Has anyone had these sounds before?

What grade gas are you running?
87-89-91-93?
If your running 87, step upto 89...If that does not help, do you have a drivetrain warranty? If yes get the shortblock replaced under the warranty!

If I run higher octane wouldn't that just make the knocking/ pinging worse? I have a non-magnum 2.0. Also the warranty is out.... However, I think the knocking is due to my oil ( Mobil 1 5W-30) and the chirping may be and exhaust leak or the heatshield making noise.

I switched from Mobil 1 to RoyalPurple 5-30 and my knocking was gone, typical first start and 10-20sec noise but after that its more exhaust noise than anything.
Other's have also mentioned a new Penzoil Platinum oil that they claim is just as good as Mobil 1 but without the noise...

H,mmm I think I'm going to try the Royal Purpel stuff next time. I allways used Mobile 1 but this last time it is noticably noisy. So going to ty somthing else.

Doesnt Royal Purple cost a lot more??

Higher octane fuel DOES NOT make the knocking / pinging worse. In fact, it will make the engine quieter. This is why:

- Gasoline that has a too small octane causes damage to engine because it pre-ignites fuel to burn.

- Higher octane gasoline actually improves car's bad performance (due to knocking) because it delays the burning.

They used to add lead in to gasoline here in Europe (also in U.S and other places), before catalysator became on the market, because lead increased the octane in fuel...
Nowadays they use MTBE (oxygen based "octaneboosters") in Europe.

So, high octane gasoline doesn't mean better gasoline but it will smooth the car's driveability.
And high octane fuel also make it possible to use the car at peak performance (high rpms) safely for longer time than with low-octane.
That's why they use high octane in turbo- and other charged cars...

Knocking is affected by what fuel is used, engine's load level, engine's and intake's temperature and the shape and cleanliness of combustion chamber. So, knocking can be redused for example decreasing the load level of car, delaying the ignition, using high octane gasoline and keeping the combustion chamber debris-free.

If knocking is only occasional/temporary (in cold starts, quick accelerations and so on), it isn't that alarming.
BUT, if it continues or is non-stopping (through-out rpms), it is something to be taken seriously.

Mine knocks also. Especially in cold starts...
I use daily 95 (RON) octane and have tested 98 also. And 98 does make the motor quieter.

I dont know for sure if its legit with all neons, but mine only has 8,000 miles on it. Still something to read up on.

If you go to Royal Purple you are not supposed to change back because of synerlic properties.......when you try to change back I guess it dosent work with other oils

sounds like a marketing ploy to me.

if the engine is so loud that your hearing it while driving, you got problems and there isnt a single oil on the market that will help you.

most people have a bit of valvetrain noise. but those that have piston slap have a more serious problem on their hands.

i also doubt its your oil. mobil 1 maybe a little noisier than other oils but you shouldnt hear it while driving.

Check your plugs and wires, everyone will think im nuts, but trust me.
