i want to put in a set of higher compression pistons (looking at 10.5:1 that are on modern performance) but do i need to modify anything else? will the stock pcm be able to handle the new load or will it freak the fsck out? im hoping to get new connecting rods at the same time. this mod should increase the horsepower right?

if your going new pistons then go new rods, most people get boost happy so your going to want to back it up.
"will the stock pcm be able to handle the new load or will it freak the fsck out?"
the stock pcm will work im sure, idk why it would go out...?
"im hoping to get new connecting rods at the same time. this mod should increase the horsepower right?"
new rods will allow you to put out more horsepower, if you boost 10 on stock rods with upgraded pistons and you blow you rods, that'll sux cause now u dont have a running car. if you get new rods and you boost 15 and you dont blow it you put out more horsepower. so to answer your question, no it wont GIVE you more HP it will allow you to Create more HP kinda. idk if that makes sense but its kinda like that

i dont plan on boosting this engine. i'm going by the k.i.s.s. (keep it simple, stupid) strategy but if i come across a lot of money, then i'll do an srt4 swap. the main concern about the pcm was since its ngc, i didnt know if it would adapt to the new compression or try to dumb it all back down. i'll definitely get rods when i get pistons; i figured it'd be kinda retarted not to while i'm working on the internals

thanks for teh info!

If you’re doing that you might want to look into a new cam also. With that you would need new springs and probably retainers too. Im not 100% with this but I think you would see more out of top end work than bottom.
Me personally I plan on working outside to in and then top to bottom. Meaning bolt-on’s such as CAI, UDP, and Ignition. Then im getting a magnum head but im going to get it P+P with a new cam and what not. At the same time I will be adding a cam gear too. I am not even sure I want to really get into lower end work though, but that would come next on my list. I see it as if I do that I would want to go all out and do a 20 over boar on it. Then I would have to get new everything. Seems a little steep for me.
But that is all on my car you have your car do it how you wish and just take what I give you as an idea. I hate when people here make you feel forced into doing it there way

i plan on doing this the same way you are, from out to in, top to bottom

. that seems like the best way to me. i appreciate the ideas

how many miles on the motor you planing too do this on if it has alot you might want too get the motor bored and honed before buying the piston then you know what bore you will need

it will be a while before i can afford to even think about doing this to the car (bills suck balls) but right now it has 48k miles on it. itll prolly be closer to 100k miles (about a year or two) but i'll get it done someday. getting it bored .02 over does sound good tho...

You should really look at what your goals are. IF you don't plan to add boost, and aren't going to add an aftermarket computer and rev the engine to the moon there are cheaper ways to increase compression. The money that's spent on new rods and pistons could be used on a better flowing head, better cam or even an entry level nitrous unit. Like I said, if you aren't boosting or revving to 7500 or above I'm not sure your money would be best spent on rods and pistons.
