this squeak is pissing me off

Post by silentneon01 » Fri Jan 19, 2007 6:52 pm

Ok 2001 SE ATX. AFX UDP. Had in on the car almost since I got it squeaked for a few days after it was put on. This past summer I had the timeing belt change and all that good stuff. Shop couldn't get the correct size belt so they got what would work. I got the correct belt a few days later cause the belt squealed like hell and when it rained I lost power steering  .

I got the proper sized belt and the car was slient till the 1st rain and next day it squeal to all hell. Hit it with belt cleaner stuff to help with sqeaks and what not STP brand. was better but not great. And its been like that ever since when it rains car sounds like its going to die till I hit the ACC belt then it goes to a level of squeak I can deal with but it still annyoing imbarssing.

the belt cleaner works up to 5 mins before squeal returns. Could something else be causing this squeal. Its the power steer, A/C belt thats having the issue. Any ideas would be great.

What belt do you have on it? I use these

GATES

AC/PS: K040500 9/16" x 50 5/8" O.C./14mm x 1286mm
ALT:K040320 9/16" x 32 3/4" O.C./14mm x 831mm

Try changin them out again, and MAKE SURE you tighten the Alt belt properly/enough etc... also, as far as the squeak, could be a bad alt pulley... open the hood, listen for where the squeak comes from... using the throttle, give it some gas and listen for more/less noise, etc... I cant think of any possible way it would be the UDP... more likely it is the belts and/or odp on the alt.

I use Goodyear Gatorbacks. They are suppose to make less noise. My friends belt was acting the same as yours. He just had to tighten the belt by adjusting the Alt.

I had a 40500 when it came out of the shop and that was the one I was loosing powersteering.

The one I have now is a 40490
Its from Napa unsure who made it tho. I do know the sqeaul gets louder and higher the more gas I give it and is not as noticeable after driving for an hour. (1-way commute to work).

I never thought about the alt tho I'll give it a look over.

I've got the same sort of issues with my udp, and wet weather, if its wet out, and i use the rear defrost, the alternator belt starts to squeal, once i come to a stop, you can hear it start to squeak just a little, and then as soon as i go to take off from a set of lights, the belt starts to slip really bad. If i pedal it, it will get more violent and then start to grip, and shut up... sometimes when the sound pisses me off i do that... However sometimes, its the ACC belt that slips, i have this occur a lot less often. The only time the power steering and ac belt slip, is when i turn on the window defroster, sounds like it makes the belt slip once the ac kicks on.. not sure why my ac comes on when im defrosting.. but yea, again the squealing only starts when i take off, not steady cruising, and only if the A/C or Rear Defrost, is on.

Anyways, so i'm thinking i'm gonna grab some new belts. the ones im using are in inches.. and i remeber thinking if i could get a half inch shorter, i would, but Canadian tire didnt have it.. so maybe a different brand, that measures in mm. or cm? i've heard the gates belts fit much better, then the power torque belts i have now.

better get it fixed quick or you'll have to change the name to squeelinneon. I say just tighten the belt tensioner on the alternator a bit.

i've heard bad stuff about that stop belt squeek stuff. Like everyone said, tighten it up and see what happens. But i'd also check to see if you've got anything like oil or something like that on the belt. It could also be water, anything liquid will make the belt slip. And if it slips, it can fall off...so i'd start checking stuff, just to be safe.

yeah for sure.. its getting annoying not being able to take off without it squeeling when it rains. i think im gonna loosen the alt belts.. and push it back a bit.. and then see if that fixes anything..
I take it, if i loosen the three bolts on the alt, that ill be able to rock it back a little more.. tighten things up!

If i remember correctly there are 2 or 3 bolts that you loosen and then one big bolt that runs along the top of the alternator. You can loosen the 3 bolts that hold the alternator to your car and use the big bolt on top of the alternator to add tension to the belts. Once you add tension you re-tighten the 3 bolts holding the alternator. you probably cannot add enough tension by simply pushing on your alternator.
