There's plenty of answers on this topic, but I'll be a nice guy.

For around $150, I personally would get an SRT rear and a 31" glass pack, or just find an R/T muffler.

The R/T will probably flow better, and sound a bit more mellow, but the SRT will be loud and aggressive.

I have the R/T and a CAI on my car. Makes a VERY good, mellow, yet meaty sound. I'll be going to the SRT rear with a glasspack though in a few weeks, becuase I want it a bit louder.

Or, you can get a Thermal R&D for around that price as well. Diablo0 has one on both his black and white car.

Here soon Im gonna either put my vibrant back on and run catless with headers or, srt rear sect . It just depends on the sound and performance you're lookin for, the possibilities are endless...

the srt rear is NOT what alot of people make it out to be. Infact i believe most people that claim all sorts of great things about it are just full simply assuming things. I have had every stock exhaust system; SXT, RT and SRT. All of these exhaust systems have the same diameter midpipe at 2 1/4 inches.

The SXT has no resonator and the end tapers down to 1 7/8 inch. Unfortunately the SRT suffers the same at the muffler end of the midpipe at 1 7/8 inch. The SRT however has two small resonators back to back closest to the inlet of midpipe to dampen sound. These two midpipes create a bottleneck effect at the muffler.

The RT midpipe is a whole different exhaust. The RT has 2 1/4 piping and one single larger resonator (something near 22 inches, i can check tommorow). The biggest difference is that the muffler end does not taper down anywhere near as much as the SXT and SRT midpipes. My estimation is it tapers to a only about 2 1/8 inch.

The end of the SXT and SRT pipes really hurt performance. Some of the earlier 2nd gen neons did have 2 inch diameter piping. I do believe that 2 1/4 inches is more than enough for casual bolt on mods.

I had a 31 inch thrush on my RT midpipe. It was still quite loud with just that. Just not enough sound dampening IMO to just bolt on SRT rear pipes. My suggestion would be to get yourself a nice magnaflow and a small glasspack.

If you are getting this done professionally then i would also have them cut off the 1 7/8 inch outlet on the midpipe and replace it with something just a bit bigger to help the flow. I used a piece of 2 1/4 piping from the piece i cut for the glasspack and welded it onto the area i cut.

i don't have any sound clips but i can get you some pics of each exhaust over the weekend.

ok here is most of the info. I will snag some pics of the RT outlet tip tommorow when i install my magnum header. The exhaust is currently on the car.

As we already know. The neon does have a 2 1/4 inch diameter piping for the midpipe. the SXT has no resonator. The RT has one as shown below. The pic is actually of an SXT midpipe with a spare RT resonator that i welded on. The paint is eastwood exhaust paint to prevent rusting around the welds. Although it is not a true RT midpipe in the sense of the word. It is a true represenation of how they are.

Image

I also removed the 1 7/8 inch outlet area of the SXT pipe and added a piece of 2 1/4 pipe to make it flush. pardon the rust, its been outside for a while.

Image

Here is the SRT midpipe. It has two smaller resonators that measure about 11-12 inches each.
Image

Unfortunately you will see no gains if you add this midpipe to your car. Some people might ask why. The reason is simple; glasspacks dont add power and its still the same diameter as your stock piping. To further the anti; the SRT midpipe also tapers down at the outlet to 1 7/8 inch. Just like the SXT.

i will be sure to post some pics of my RT midpipe tommorow once i drop it out of my car.

so the best set up for sound is the stock 05 sxt pipe from cat to muffler then an srt rear section?

ah now we are getting to specific applications. If you are not worried about performance then i wouldn't worry about the outlet tip. My personal taste is deep and rather quiet. Some people like the loud and droning sounds. The exhaust setup that BigJosh has. It's been my personal favorite setups. The magnaflows however, tend to have a bit of a drone. I would put a small glasspack on it.

photobucket perhaps?

I have been thinking. A crafty exhaust shop should be able to cut the Y-joint pipe from the center of an SRT exhaust and with some cutting and such should be able to put another glasspack onto the SRT rear.

i didn't do anything with my car today due to rain. when i get home tommorow i will pull out the srt pipes i have and get some pics. i will help plan on rigging a glasspack onto the srt rear when i have it out.

alright, back from work and thought this thing out. I had a hard time finding a good flat pic of a glasspack so please bear with me.

this is a stock srt rear
Image

scenario1 involves simply using one large glasspack to dampen the sound. you can just cut the pipes and kind of smudge things together. the outlet can simply be bent over to fit into the glasspack and everything can be welded up.

Image

scenario 2 involves two glasspacks and a Y joint(not shown) in between. The srt uses two smaller glasspacks on the midpipe too. Don't take my word for this but i believe this is done to break up sound vibrations better.

Image

As i said before, any crafty muffler shop can rig this up on the cheap as long as you already have the srt rear.

FWIW: I'm using the R/T pipes, minus the resonator, into a Magnaflow muffler. It gives the occasional "burble" but it's pretty quiet. It doesn't drone.

just to finish off the last of the info and possibly bury the thread. here is a pic of the RT midpipe outlet at the top and the SRT midpipe outlet at the bottom. I am still in shock to why DCX would put that junk on a turbo car. RT FTW

yea i have had the chance to own 4 different types of exhuast for my car....

stock sxt
stock r/t - minus the resonator i took out and welded in a piece
stock srt
Thermal r&d FULL catback

i think the stock r/t has had the best over feel, and the best investment....don't buy just the muffler, try to get the full catback so you don't have the bottleneck effect kevo is talkin about...unless you buy the r/t muffler and cut the bottleneck out and weld a 2.25 piece in it's place...
