day 3 cam install

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

day 3 cam install

Post by underway » Fri Feb 09, 2007 11:27 am

well i bought a #10 crane cam and was following the steps that wats his face put up under how-to's and it was goin great was on track for about 4 hours to do the whole thing when i ran into THE WALL..the timing belt tensioner was all the way loose and the belt was no way goin back on..to tight... so then i decided i would have to pull the harmonic pulley b/c i needed to get that tensioner off and compress it and so i did and the belt went on like butter of course..then i had the whole dam thing put back together and went to start it and VROOOOM!!... shi clunk shi clunk shi clunk...nothing ....so i then checked the #1 piston to see if it was at top dead when the cam was...aaaannd no...it was off by one tooth of course....so here i am bout to start day 3 of this project and hopefully the last day..btw do u think that one tooth would make it flat out not start at all?...hope thats the problem...let me know

it should have started i would think, because you'll get a CEL if you're timing's off a tooth...are you sure it's only off 1 tooth??? and that you bolted everything down to spec?

Dowel pin? Is that what you're referring to as the knuckle? If that is broken, you still might be ok...but you're going to have to really make sure and get the bolt in the end tight....while making sure the cam gear is in the right place on the cam when tightening that bolt down, cause know you don't have that dowel pin to locate the gear on the cam.
