Im a noob, Compression-Octane/Cam Questions

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Im a noob, Compression-Octane/Cam Questions

Post by rannox » Thu Mar 29, 2007 12:23 am

I searched but couldnt find any help

I want to still run on the street using pump gas, but im a complete noob when it comes to compression.

I want improved performance with a new cam, so a higher compression, but i still wanna use pump gas.

So can anyone give me a quick generalization on "compression to Octane"?

Ive had recommendations of a Magnum, or a 14 cam. Any ideas on the compression i would have with everything else being stock?

I just wana make sure i can still use at the most, premium.

Thanks, and if theres some blatantly obviose post, sorry. lol

I can't help you with the cam, as I have no knowledge about them.

But with gas, the higher compression you go, the higher octane you have to run. 2G Neon R/T's run a 10:1 compression ratio (i think) and run on premium gas.

10.5:1 should be fine with premium gas. I would probley even go with 11:1, but thats just me. Stock r/t's have 9.81:1.

Changing the cam does not effect the static compression ratio,

the r/t's run 9.8:1, another thing thats effects octane needs is the timing.

your compression ratio will not change with a change in cams. your dynamic? compression will go up with a small cam, and down with a large cam. that is why engines that are intended for the street and have high compression will run a large cam to bleed off some of the cylinder pressure.

on the stock computer you dont want to go too crazy with the cam, or you will lose low end and not be able to see the top end gains.
