I remember reading that most people have done it with the engine out

sheesh guys, this isn't the .org

You need to get up under the car to really see it and reach it. Its takes a little bit of maneuvering to get to it and get it out, but it can be done. Forgot the size of the plug, but you will need a deep socket to get it out.

You can get a special socket to fit it, but I used a 24mm or 25mm and it worked fine. Getting around the axle isn't fun, but getting at the sending unit from underneath the car is your best bet. I had my car up on ramps when I did my oil pressure gauge. You'll lose a little bit of oil that way, but it will make everything easier to get to. Even removing the battery and the battery tray, it's still less awkward getting it from the bottom in my opinion.

Thats the spirit. If you fail, try try again. Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again. Same thing

If you use a long extension on the socket, it makes it pretty easy to get at it from under the car. Getting the stock pressure switch out is the easy part though. Depending on what kind of sender your installing, you may have to remove the rear tranny brace...

I did mine with my exhaust manifold off, i was doing my turbo setup at the time so it wasnt a big deal. but I tried to do it beforehand from underneath like you are and had no luck. Also none of my sockets fit I had to get the special oil sender socket from advance.

I installed a Tee with aftermarket and oem senders no problem. Sure it took about 3 hours to get it all nice and tight, but it worked. Just a few cuts on your hands, but once you get a pattern going and figure out how to stuff the tools in there, you'll have no problems at all.

Get a long enough extension where your ratchet can swing down between the steering rack and the axle. That's pretty much the only place I could get any room to use the tools.

That sounds bad. If I left my car on stands to work under it, I rock the car some to make sure it's 100% safe on the stands and always have someone around. Your very lucky to still be alive.

Yeah, to say the least!!
Seriously though, I will tell you one thing: something like this will definitely have you working more safely because it will never leave your mind. I had a car drop on just the sole of my shoe sideways when I was 17, and that was plenty enough to scare me even though I didn't get hurt.
