Cam questions

Post by sxt4ever » Sat May 26, 2007 12:42 pm

I hate to be a drag but..... Im building my SOHC and decided that i might get a cam. I already have an adjustable gear sitting around and was wondering what else i may need to install a crane #12 cam. Once again, sorry to be a drag and thanks to all!

Think i found the answer to my question. Looking on modern site, they say that for a #12 cam, you need performance valve springs. So the edit to my question is weather i need the retaining rings and springs or can i get by with just the springs?

No need to get the retaining rings, and save some money and get the Magnum valve springs from your dealer, or used here on the forums... I am assuming you know what the magnum springs are, but if not... they are from an 01-04 RT engine, or 01-02 ACR engine. :D They should be plenty to install a #12 Crane.

yes you can keep your stock retainers... but for the crane cam I would personally IMHO get the crane springs. i believe the crane cam has a bit more lift that the magnum cam, or something like that... but make sure you have all of the bolt ons before you cam it... or else your going to be disapointed.

just out of curiosity, do you have a turbo? just wondering about the 12 grind...

good luck tuning

You might consider simply swapping your head for a magnum head. The valve springs are already in there, and the standard cam on the HO head is already about as good as a crane 12 from what ive heard. The exhaust ports on the mag head are much larger than those on the regular head. You could probably find one for close to the price of a new cam too.

howdy again, the magnum swap is a very good swap. ive done it. the magnum cam is about the same as the crane 10 grind. the 12 grind is a turbo grind with a shorter exhaust duration. it keeps teh exhuast valves closed longer so when they open the gasses speed out of the cylinder faster. but yea i would do a headswap in a heart beat!
