Cam Sensor.

Ok, I have a question about my cam sensor. Well, a couple days ago my check engine like came on so I went to the auto parts store and had them pull the codes. The code they pulled for me was P0340, which said it was malfunctioning. Now I'm wondering what could of caused that. Could it of been from putting a new muffler (cherry bomb) on my car? Or just it was time for it to go? If anyone can help I'd be much appreciated. Thanks!

P0340 indicates a malfunction somewhere in the camshaft position sensor circuit, not just the sensor itself. Meaning the problem could be anywhere in the circuit (sensor, wiring, or PCM), which sucks for sourcing the problem.
Start with the cheapest route and look over the wiring. Be on the lookout for areas where the wire is worn down or broken. If that doesn’t prove to be the problem I would try a new sensor. Those two things aren’t two difficult and you should be able to handle them yourself depending on your mechanical ability.
If neither of those are the problem I would suggest taking it to the dealer. The last source of the problem could be the PCM and I would let them handle it. I don’t normally suggest the dealer but when it comes to the PCM there isn’t much you can do and they will be able to run tests on it to figure out the problem.

No problem, let me know how it works out.

Alright, I most definately will. But do you have any idea of what might have caused this to happen?

If it’s the wiring it might have just rubbed in the wrong spot for long enough and now it is shorting out the circuit. As far as the sensor or PCM go, mechanical and electric devices can go bad for no good reason. When items like that are produced and tested the rate of failure is calculated. This is how they determine how long certain items will last. Obviously that means you could have two of the same item and one will last longer than the other, even when used in the exact same situation. I am not sure how many miles are on your car but it could just be that your sensor or PCM are at the lower end of their life expectancy.

Oh, I see. Makes sense. My car has 64K on it. But thanks again, bro.

Now the check engine light doesn't even come on any more. So IDK what's up. IDK if it was intermittant short and it's ok now or if the sensor is starting to fail. It's running ok, and starting ok, but it just had one time when the check engine light was on and it had that code that it started hard.

Update: Ok, my car started to have the check engine light come on again, but this time it was worse. The car started to lag/stall & wouldn't go over 20 mph. So we changed the Sensor and now it works great.
