There are very few stores that actually sell Amsoil
The easiest way to get it is online.

Any word on how good this stuff really is? I have been using Castrol Syntec for years....Speeder wrote:i went to pepboys to see if they had the new castrol oil and here it is
it looks good it has a yellowish tint to it
price at pepboy is $7.99 a dollar more than the castrol syntec

0w30 will be fine in the car, it has better cold flow ability than 5w30.
honestly, in florida i'd probably run 10w30.

Humidity only affects things that rely on moisture evaporating to cool them. It therefore has no bearing on a car's radiator.miken913 wrote:, but in the summer it gets pretty very humid, were 80 feels like 90,
More humidity might actually cool better, as the extra moisture in the air may absorb more heat, but it prolly isn't enough to make any real difference.
The same with windchill.
It doesn't matter if it's 10ºF and a wind chill of -30ºF, the coolant in the raidator of a parked car that hasn't ran, will still be 10ºF.
If the car is running, then yes it would be the same as traveling at whatever speed the wind is blowing provided it is facing the wind.

Use 5w30 year round. I grew up about an hour south of Rochester in Dansville, so I know what kind of whether you are talking about.
5w30, especially a synthetic oil, is good to very cold temps. And it will be good for your high temp range. 0w30 will be just fine for the winter if you want that little extra cold flow ability. Honestly 0w30 year round is probably fine too.
When it comes to oil weights it is over thought by many. You can use 0w30 or 5w30 year round. Or 0w30 or 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer.

Kind of. In order to achieve certain spreads increased amounts of Viscosity Index Improvers (VII's) are needed.

I honestly don't know why anyone would use Mobil 1 over AMSOIL. It costs nearly the same(amsoil a bit more UNLESS you get it from a dealer), and you get WAY more mileage out of it.
5000k? FUK NO with amsoil it's more like 15,000k, and some oils up to 25,000(10w-30).
http://forums.s2ki.com/forums/showthrea ... ht=castrol
I put 5W-20 in my car BEFORE last winter, and I still have another 7000k before I have to change it. The oil is no more black then it was 2000k after I added it.
Oil change cost me about $50 canadian, and I seen better performance, longer change intervals, and less power loss over time compared to other oils I have used.
Edit: Just an FYI, 5W-20 change interval with AMSOIL is recommended every 20,000k
For an extra $3 a qt, That is amazing.

Please for the love of all that is good, test that oil before going 20,000km with any oil.
The extended intervals are only for certain driving conditions and all oil still has a recommendation to change once per year.

I also never go close to the 20k oil change interval, but it's been proven that the oil holds up as well at 20k as do regular oils at around 2k to 3kracer12306 wrote:Please for the love of all that is good, test that oil before going 20,000km with any oil.

I plan on changing mine soon, and most likely to regular oil since it's cheaper and the motor is getting pulled soon.
I want to try the 0w30 stuff since its always pretty cold here up in Canadia. Is there any conv oil brands that sell 0w30? I checked with the local Crappy Tire and there only seems to be Mobil 1 syn.
I'm prob SOL, but I may just try the M1 to test some of the theories I have seen lately in this thread and others.

0w30 is only available in synthetic.
Yes, AMSOIL is recommended for long intervals but only in the correct conditions and it carries a one year time interval regardless of mileage.
Grandma occasionally driving into town and church on Sunday will kill an engine driving that long between oil changes with AMSOIL and not changing it every year at a minimum.
I know almost everything there is to know about AMSOIL. I was a dealer a couple years ago and I made it a point to educate myself on the product.

All the below numbers are in MILES, not KILOMETERS.
0w30 is available from Pennzoil, Mobil, Castrol and AMSOIL. That is just off the top of my head, I'm sure there are a few others.
Technically the recommended interval is 3000 miles. However, many people with Neons have successfully gone 5000 miles with synthetic oils. More than likely 7500 is possible, assuming the correct driving conditions are seen.
I was going to go 7500 miles with my Neon when I was driving it regularly. It was seeing a number of highway miles a day. This would have been a good candidate for a longer oil change.
However, I was going to test the oil at 5000 to make sure there was enough active additive remaining in the oil.

Blackstone Labs is the place I have used.
It's around $20 or $30 USD iirc.

I use amsoil (about 5 qts.) 5w-20 and purolator pure one (viper filter) It quieted my engine a lot. I change the oil every 3500-4000 miles just because its old habit. Now I hear that I could use 5w-30 in the summer months. Is that ok since I know that I will be doing a lot of highway trips with shows and stuff coming up. Just curious cause I know my car being an 05 recommends 5w-20.

If you desire, feel free to use 5w30. However, there is no particular need to use 5w30 over the 5w20. In the past 9 years 5w20 has proven that it can hold up very well in every Ford (except the 4.0L V-6) and every Honda (except the 2.0 found in the S2000 and maybe the RSX-S)
Manufacturers started using 5w20 solely for CAFE reasons, it gets them an extra mpg or so to play with on their required mpg number.

Also, if you want to switch to 5w30 year round there should be no problems with that. The 5w20 and 5w30 have essentially the same cold flow ability.
