Fool the cops for exhaust violation.

I think we all know that srt-4 owners are given a hard time by cops for the exhaust being too loud, and alot of them don't wanna hear it when you tell them that the car comes stock without a muffler.
But after doing some research, it seems the judge always throws out the ticket because there is always proof that the srt-4 really does come with a muffler straight out of the factory.
Anyways, I have a magnaflow catback rear section on my 2001 neon right now and I want to go louder, so i'm gonna buy a srt-4 exhaust.
Now here is what I plan to do, slap on a srt badge somewhere on my car and keep a srt4 manual in the glovebox.
I'm pretty sure most cops can't tell the difference between the neon models, when a cop pulls me over I can show him the srt4 manual to prove that the car comes without a muffler straight from the factory.
And if the cop is a real asshole he will give me the ticket and I can just bring the manaul to the judge.
Think it will work? Or will it say in the cops computer if the car is a Neon LE or SXT or Srt-4 ?
The back of my car is gonna look like a srt4 real soon, but the front will be from a 02, if a cop really knows his cars he could tell me that I don't have a srt4 bumper in which case I could say i replaced it with a custom from bumper from a 2002 neon ...... and a cop that really knows his shit could ask to look under the hood, then id be screwed ... can a cop check under the hood? Or does he need a warrant if you refuse ?

their computer will tell them the make and model, so that's a no go.
But technically you can still get away with it because it doesn't have to be stock FOR THAT CAR, it just has to be stock on some or other production car, within limits.

i have the srt exhaust from the cat back and got a ticket a while ago. i just found a neon with my paint color at a dealership and took some pics showing the stock exhaust/muffler. i didnt even get the plates in the pic (on purpose or they'd know it wasn't my car). went to court, they called my name, i showed some older guy the was dealing with the paperwork the pix i took and said that i put it back to stock, he says ok, got my license back and i was free to go. no court costs or anything either.

your registration card will give you away

I'm pretty sure it just says Neon on your registration, even if you have an SRT-4. Just like if you have a Mitsu Evo, it still says Lancer on your registration.

Most cops won't go thru the trouble of trying to look under your hood so you can prove it is what you say it is. they'll give you the ticket, then it's your responsebility to prove to the judge that it's legal.

I thought you just said that you have an 01 neon... That would be why it says neon.

I've had an SRT rear section w/glasspack (which is pretty useless now) for over a year and haven't been pulled over yet

If you drive like a tool you'll just attract negative attention, drive normal and you're just a loud neon.
Advice: Don't drive like a tool and you'll be fine

yes they will, Im pretty sure they wont take the risk of having you plea not guilty, then he would have to make time to go to court and look like an ass in front of his buddies and the judge.
registration and Insurrance wont lie for you so you'll be on thin ice with your story..

and then there's the part that they have to have a legit reason to do anything but stare at your car like an idiot, meaning if a cop asks to see under your hood you have every right to either ask why or just say no. and if you're a chick and he asks exactly "let me see under your hood" then it would be a stretch but it would be funny if you could get him in trouble

if you lived by me, and had a "modified" appearing car, the cops can open your hood to check for any "illegal" modifications in accordance with local anti-street racing laws. and the further north you go, (like the IE or san berdoo) they'll pull you over, measure the dB level of your exhaust, measure your headlight height, check under the hood, and check in the trunk.
and if you refuse, they can detain you till they get a warrant. i had to sit on a curb for 45 minutes the first (and only) time i said no.
sorry for the hijack

wow, what a bunch of dicks... i think that's one of the few benifits of living in wisconsin, cops can really care less about this stuff. igot pulled over for my borla exhaust and all i needed to tell him was that it's legal in california so OBVIOUSLY it's legal here, and that was all i heard about it

The VIN number is on you registration card. That right there is an automatic for being able to tell a neon from a neon on crack.

Im not sure about the states, but im pretty sure on the registry here it doesn't say the exact model, it just says Neon.
I'm gonna double check my insurance papers and registration in the morning.

I'm sure they do that to speed up the process. Last time I was up I-94 Milwakee way it looked like they couldn't pull you over fast enough

the main reason that the srt can get away without mufflers stock is the fact that federal law acknowledges a turbocharger as a muffler. that is the reason that 99% of the srt cases are thrown out.

Thank you for pointing that out. thats why the srt4 doesnt have any mufflers or flow restictions in its cat-back system..

meh, loud mufflers and sound systems save lives. those little kids playing on the road with their chalk in hand drawing pretty pictures on the pavement won't notice the stupid bitch driving down the road doing her makeup. But if that stupid bitch had a loud exhaust and loud music playing the little kid would look up and move! (maybe...)

thats a scary thought for any parent..

^^^Sure is...
I don't know why people pull over stock SRT4's anyway...they aren't that loud. All the rice burners around here are much louder than my car. when I hear a srt down the road I can hear it but not for very long. I drive by a police station everyday and nothing ever comes of it here. I think people in california need to hear some real noise or something...

and then when you call him on it, he "detects the odor of marjijuana", calls in a dog, it hits on your engine compartment and he looks in there anyways. or one of many other tricks they have to get done what they want to get done. warrent this warrent that only pisses them off and makes them take a closer look at what they want to look at.
bottom line, like it was said before, unless you drive like a retard or it's a just plain really slow day, you're probably not going to get messed with over a loud exhaust. 9/10 times you see a cop moving on the street, they're already on the way to a call and not concerned with you at all until you do something extremely stupid in front of them.

For the cops it is about enforcing the regulations and keeping the roads safe.
How is that related to loud exhausts?
It grabs their attention and sets a little alarm bell off... "modified vehicle and possible street racer".

thats b/c street racers have always been known to have loud pipes so now they think that all loud pipes are street racers. and that they find a lot of loud pipe street racers are rindin dirty. my bro in-law is a cop so i find out all the little dirt and yes cops here are good for profilling any modded cars. all i can say is good luck

I hate to say it but its sad and true.....
In a scence its called profiling....Ever since F&F came out it got worse!
That muscle car roaring by, nah lets get that kid with the honda and a fart can....
Harley goes roaring by....nah lets get that "Neon" with cuda stripes on the side....
That's what urks me the most!
Ive had 4 tickets in the past year and a half, while I was driving and while my wife was driving. At the times of getting pulled over, neither of us were doing anything illegal....its just the looks of the car....
Stop 1 - Wife driving, I had her caravan at work for repairs....she came to a stop, gets stopped for window tint and modified exhaust
Stop 2 - Me, I'm on my way home from the hospital and get stopped after driving through a yellow light, he nails me for a modified exhaust and littering....I tossed my cigarette butt before he came upto the car, more courtesy than anything...
Stop 3 - Me, on the way to my mother in laws to fix her furnace, I get stopped for rear door window tint and no front plate
Srop 4 - Me, on the way to work...get stopped for speeding and a modified exhaust, I stated I was doing 60 in a 55 and my exhaust is now stock. He refused to believe me, I stated Ive been stopped twice before for a modified exhaust and im running a stock muffler now...he hesitates then nails me for my front plate because there was chicken wire in front of it.....
NYS law states - any modification to the exhaust system to make it louder than stock in any way is illegal....even an exhaust tip
NYS law states - Nothing at all can be in front of the liscense plate, no plastic, metal nothing....
NYS law states - Tinted windows must have atleast 70% light transmission, wich means just about any aftermarket window tint is illegal
Got to love NYS....

sorry for ya. im glad i dont live there. nc, no laws like that i can go as loud as i want. and window tint here is 35%

as far as NC you are incorrect. there are vehicle equipment laws. however the sound laws are usually city or county ordinances that you are charged with. and the going rate in W/S where i worked as a Police Officer, at 98db you were in violation of the city ordinance. a vacuum cleaner is louder than that. where North Carolina makes its money is inspection time... when they charge you the extra "window tint" fee on your inspections.
do cops profile, yes of course we do. does that mean we are prejudice, no it doesn't. most times if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck. it usually is a duck. I would stop a honda in a heartbeat... because the ones in my area had the obnoxious fart cannons, felt it necessary to spin out at every intersection and just be plain ignorant when it came to driving. and for the area that was a problem. neighborhood complaints, means more reports i have to write and questions from my supervisors of how i was to correct the problem to increase "quality of life" for the residents. and just a pain to me.
we all know cops are lazy... I had my moments!!

and it is quicker to write a ticket then to listen to miss smith call and complain for the 1500th time about the "kids racing up and down the street"
I will say though, if you are driving like you have some sense... I wouldnt pay any attention to you... unless you wernt wearing your seatbelt
have fun guys...

after reading this, i'm glad i live in miami!
I've actually been tailed by cops NASTY in my neon which was bone stock and super quiet exhaust. I guess the rims and tail lights make it rice?
But down here you dont get pulled over for speeding unless you're doing 30 or 40 above the posted limit. Thing is everybody speeds so cops cant really pull over every single joe shmoe out there and give every single driver on the highway a ticket. I have a Honda with a fart can muffler and the same cop pulled me over twice to check out my car. Down here, the only car modification law is that it has to have a cat. Doesnt matter where but it has to have one. And since 99.9% of all cops never check then meh.
For street racing, we have DTs or undercovers that roll around in tricked out cars (turbo'd hondas, srt4s, chargers) you name it they got it.
All in all, they dont really pull you over if you speed (unless its excessive) its more if you drive recklessly cuz you can drive fast but when you drive fast AND cut ppl off or cut across 3 or 4 lanes on the highway, then they stop you.
oh btw the cops down here bought the 1/8 mi track in hialeah fl for a day and let everybody that wanted to, bring their cars and race the cops tricked out rides.
