Oil in intake...

Post by Mr Josh Zombie » Tue Oct 09, 2007 10:51 pm

So I finally starred to rip into the NYG a bit and take off the TB so I could get to the sensor. Well, I look into my intake manifold, and it is CAKED in oil. I'm talking about a good solid covering.

What is a good way of cleaning that out without actually taking the manifold off?

Guess I'll be getting a catch can for this thing. Damn people and never taking care of their cars...

I don't think you will be able to get it all without removing the intake.

But you can try seaform and/or carb cleaner.

That sounds like a bad idea if he's not taking it off. What if some seeps into the head...? That stuff's highly flammable.

even not using brake cleaner, it would be better to take it off.

Bah, I'm much to lazy to do all of that. Doesn't seafoam break that stuff up?

Is it oil or carbon buildup? IIf it's black and sticky/crusty lookin, it's carbon. If it's carbon buildup, then yea but if it's oil, theres probably a more serious problem. Oil shouldn't be in there. If you got too much crank case pressure, i might send some through the breather tube but I doubt it.

Yeah I don't know if sea foam can get rid off gunked up oil. It would probably help a little bit but since it's right there in the intake manifold I have no idea how much it would help.

best bet is to take the intake off and soak the oil using brake cleaner, lossens all the crusty oil up. theres really no other way to clean it without taking it out. also, when you put everything back together, get a can of mopar combustion chamber cleaner. its really good stuff.

thats why people usually install a catch can to avoid getting oil in the intake. from factory, theres a tube from the PCV to the intake. no problem there.

Learn somethin new every day. I work on ford all day and I'm not realy familiar with my 2gn yet.

Back n topic, though. DO NOT soak the PLASTIC intake in brake clean. brake clean EATS plastic. I know cuz I have seen it first hand, both in clean out my funnel at work with it and by accidentally getting it on the plastic nose pad of my glasses. When I got it on my nose pads, I didn't know I had done it so I put em on. THAT HURT! I had a rash on my nose for a week.....back on topic again! DO take the intake manifold off but soak it in virgin solvent or simple green. Make sure you clean it very thoroughly before you put it on.

I guess a good question is...

Is this a plastic or metal intake?

I know 1gn's came with both.

Meh, little oil in the intake never hurt anything. 2gn's pool a decent amount of oil, doesn't hurt anything as it sits low enough in the intake.

Use a rag taped to a long screw driver and get as much up as you can. Seafoam it with 1/2 can and it will be gone. We did the same to my buddies 1st gen
