Oils

Post by racer12306 » Thu Oct 18, 2007 10:21 am

Just wondering if anyone is actually using a 5w40 or a 0w40 oil in their 2.0. I know the 0w40 is common in the SRT.

How do you like it? Engine quieter?

How is that 10-30 working for you?

It's never cold here, so i'm thinking about it.

Working alright. I have other underlying problems though. MY oil pump is starting to go out so I'm using a thicker oil to help keep my pressure up a little till I get it changed out. (two weeks tops) I would normally use 5w 30.

10w30 isnt really thicker than 5w30.

Their cold flow abilities are different, but once the engine warms up they are practically the same viscosity. Some 5w30's are actually thicker at operating temp than some 10w30's

0w-20 would prolly make your pump last longer it will pump easier-less strain on your pump I ran it in my cherokee before walmart stopped carrying it. the pressure @idle was actually higher on the gauge than 5w-30. My only guess is that it pumps more efficiently. Never tried it in the neon as I couldn't find it anymore. didn't gain any mpg tho Hot Rod Mag did a dyno test with 0w-20 vs 20w50 and found no change in wear and made more hp with the 0w-20
Note: the 0w-20 = mobil 1 syn.

Pennzoil Platnum also has a 0w20. Its marketed towards the hybrids.

5w20 would probably deliver similar results.

I live in Michigan and I use Mobile 1 10w-30 for summer and Mobile 1 5w-30 for the winter. My car still has 10w-30 in it, and it has seen some 30 degree weather, and still starts up just fine. I am thinking of switching to some higher end oil like Amsoil or Eneos.
