Ticking noise from around the plugs

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Ticking noise from around the plugs

Post by kevo » Fri Jan 25, 2008 6:57 pm

Weird thing happened while i was installing my new top motor mount. After the install i turned on the car and heard an odd ticking noise. After putting my ear near the engine it seems to be coming from the head area of piston 4.

I went ahead and took off the wire. I smelled plenty of gas on it and it has some char marks. I took off the spark plug and they were pretty with chars near the top half of the plug (they are champions). I changed all of the plugs with another set of champions i have here. Same ticking noise. Have a spare set of wires, installed them and the same effect.

I have a screamin demon coil pack and so i took out my stock coil pack and did a swap. still the ticking noise is there. It sounds to me like its a constant ticking from an electrical arch but I am at a complete loss here on what else to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing that you gapped the plugs? Don't think that would matter but either way...

Plus, i think all neons have a ticking noise that comes from the engine. My 01 SE did and so does my R/T

thanks for the response. I have never gapped my plugs and yet have never had this problem until now.

It very well could be your injectors as well. They pulsate and click while they open.

I miss my neon at times. She treated me well and taught me a lot about cars in general. I will always have a special place in my heart for these cars. Heres to the 2gn community.

yeah, welcome to the neon world....all of our engines tick eventually, mine has for a while now, lol

if you wanna test the injector to see if its going back, move it to cyl 1. if the sound moves, you know where its coming from.....but unless you're getting a code from it, i wouldnt be too concerned about it...

my car sounds like a deisel when i start it up on cold mornings

take a long screwdriver and put the tip on the injector, and put the end by your ear and listen to the clicking on each one. they should all be fast and similiar. thats just a quick audible test to see if anythings out of the ordinary.

but they tick fast.. if its ticking in time with the cylinders, it would probably be an arc in the wires. are you getting any codes?

The injectors also tick in time with the cylinders. Sequential Port Injection. If it was batch injection then the ticking of the injectors would be diferent then ignition events. granted the injectors fire just before the coils, but they are actually more in time, as each coil fires two cyl.s at once. Batch ignition. :D

you could always measure the resistance of the injectors also...
They should all be around the same OHM rating, if one is to far off its probably going bad.....
