HELP!!! I need a tensioner

I have a 02 acr and the tensioner for the drive belt is going bad. I've talked to my local dodge store and it is on back order and don't know when they will be able to get it. I also have talked to all the local parts stores and they do not even have a listing for it. I don't know what else to do.

Is the pulley bearing going bad or the tension spring? IIRC, NAPA sells a idler pulley that will fit. Now if it can be replaced without removing the whole mount bracket, IDK. I would still order a replacement, because my luck I'd get the pulley fixed and the spring will break 3 months later. Atleast if it's the pulley you can buy some time...

Make the rounds of the dealerships until you find a parts guy willing to work with you and bring a tensioner in from another dealership that has one in stock.

That is what I needed to do last fall. The first guy I dealt with wasn't interested in going through the trouble, but the mechanic working on my car hooked me up with a good parts guy at another dealership who brought the part in from a dealership down south that had 17 in stock.

I'd provide you with the name of that dealership, but this is in Canada so I'm not sure about the crossborder arrangements between dealerships.

:withstupid: It does kinda suck. The only problem with junkyard parts is that this is a common problem (my '02 ACR has this issue as well).

Good luck man.

It's not a horrible job. Just a pain jacking the engine up and down six ways from sunday to get at the mounting fasteners. After you've done it once, it's pretty quick to do.

Hey Dante
that part number is the same Chrysler gave me here in OZ...They said it was a mechanical tensioner part number....is this part the same as ....

Nope, not at all. The number I posted is for the tensioner assembly for the A/C belt. It's the big metal bracket that bolts to the outside of the engine. It is what the upper mount bolts to.

Well, in their defense, it is a tensioner, but an A/C belt tensioner instead of a timing belt tensioner. Don't feel too bad Alex, we have idiots working at some of our dealers too
