tick tick tick HELP!!!!

hey guys
so just recently i have noticed a ticking noise comming fromthe left or belt side of my engine.
i read in another post that this could be due to idler or timing belt tensioner. well the idler was replaced so im thinking its the timing belt one.
my dad thinks it might be the lifters but he is not as good with neons as you guys are so im looking for your input.

your dad's probably right. Its a common"problem" with neons, they mush have been a loose-tolerance design.

Of course we all know that the 2.0L Neon doesn't have lifters, it has hydralic tappets on the rocker arms but we all know what you're trying to say. I've got the same noise. Think I'll go to a good synthetic oil(castrol syntec) in a 5w30 when I change the oil and probably a Motorcraft FL 300 filter(at least I think that's the one) it's suppose to be a bit larger so I can add an extra 1/4 qt. or so of oil and it'll filter more.

there were times where it gets to 10 below without the windchill.
im thinking this noise has something to do with one cold start in the morning...i know what the lifters and that sound like and this is a different noise thats only comming from the side with the belts.
the noise gets more noticable when i rev it a lil.
could somehting with the altinator make this noise?
the belt slips ever time there is a little water or snow on it, but this could be totally un related lol

Im w/ your dad. I have same noise but increased due to crane 0007. I think because of duration. Mines are noisy but the intake side. My mech check them out for me during 0007 intallation. They arent bad at all but I'll be rev ~7800rpms, maybe (depending on dyno graph) I'll be rev higher w/ a MS. Its the cheapest way to go 8100-8300rpms as XKidrt told me he did w/ the twicked ecu.
Anyway... where can I purchase new rockers but for a cheap price, the better if they bring solid lifters for SOHC.

How many miles? If you're close to 105K, then it's time to replace the tensioner/Timing belt/water pump/camseal. Then if it still ticks, it's the lifters, or if you want to get politically correct, Lash Adjusters. I found that after I had new exhaust guides installed the engine was alot quieter. If you were wondering about replacing the lash adjusters, the only way to do it is buy new rocker assy's as they are built into the rocker arms. DCX used the Mitsubishi design for the SOHC, not the 2.2 style like the DOHC's got. The main downside to the SOHC setup is the increased mass in the recprocating assy.

i dont think anything has been replaced yet lol.
my car is going in tomorrow and they are going to check it out...if it is the tensioner i will have em do the timing belt and camseal as well seeing as they already have it apart.
as far as the water pump i would think that is something somewhat easy that i could do right?
the engine can stay in for that or is that hard too?

I can Tell you for sure, that my A/C compressor, makes a weird click sound on every rotation of the main drive belt. Not sure why it does it really, since my a/c still works amazing...Happens mostly when its cold, or the car hasn't run for long..

Then why not removing that belt as troubleshooting? Then see if tik tik tik persists.

How do you think i figured out where the sound was coming from...lol
i was telling nate-00neon that because he may just be hearing his a/c compressor clicking, when the car is cold.. mine does it, and his may too..

The timing belt runs the water pump, and chances are it's leaking, not enough to notice, but some slight seepage if it has 123K. If the belt hasn't been changed you're running on borrowed time. I hope your tick isn't a piece of the belt slapping the cover.
For what you will pay to have the belt done you could buy the tools/parts to do it yorself for alot less. There are how to's on doing the timing belt on here and the other org. for the cam seal, the pulley needs removed. This can be the hardest part, as the bolt is very tight. If you want to be safe, like not tweaking a valve while breaking it loose, pull the valve cover, you will prolly need upper spark plug tube seals anyway, and loosen the rocker shafts evenly so all the valves close. Then you can spin the cam all day and you wont hurt a thing. To hold the cam sprocket, I used some chain style Vise Grips, and let them rest against an immovable object and put the breaker bar on the bolt.Remove the spocket and cam seal press in the new seal. (they are easily done by hand). install sprocket, Retorque with tq wrench, set the crank/cam pulleys to the right positions install the belt/set tensioner and rotate engine a couple of times recheck the timing marks, if correct, tighten down the rocker shafts evenly torque to spec, and reinstall valve cover with new tube seals.

uhm kinda....but when you have the hood shut and are by the belts you really only hear a tciking...and mine you can really tell is comming from the left side of the engine

the sound at the end of the video sounds like rod knock. The noise from the close up underhood is good ol lifter thrash.

If I had a mechanic, that would be the belt that was sticking out of his ass! j/k It is either the PS/compressor belt or the alternator.
