So i'm just looking around and wondering if anyone has ever tried to replace the r/t muffler with a magnaflow muffler or borla or flowmater or something? keeping the tips and everything but just swapping out the mufflers?

and if so what muffler did you use because i've checked the magnaflow site and a couple others for a muffler with:
Inlet | |
outlet| |Outlet

and i can't find nothin, i'm just thinking about doing that to the r/t or possibly the srt rear section if i can't find a muffler in the wtb section.

BlackRoseRacing took his stock R/T muffler, and had it replaced with a Flowmaster 80 series muffler if I remember correctly.

After searching through posts for about 2 hours I finally found one where the guy gives the part number. It's a camaro/firebird model specific muffler, so it doesn't show up on the universal muffler search. The magnaflow was #12266, and the dynomax was #17739.


I just ordered the magnaflow one from here: http://www.performancecenter.com/produc ... ber/111330

They had the cheapest price at $89 with free shipping so I snatched one up.

I'm not sure what the flowmaster one was, but I'm sure if you look up the camaro/firebird muffler you can find it. I heard the 80 series was the one to get, but I've never heard it before. The ones I looked at were about $150, so I went with the cheaper magnaflow.

how does that magnaflow install? does it sit sideways like the stock muffler? also, what would you use for tips?

It installs exactly like the stock muffler, and from what I can tell it's the exact same size. Only difference is another outlet on the inlet side. I already have tips on the ghetto exhaust, so I'm probably going to just swap those over. If not, I'll just do straight pipes until I find some I like.

I'm getting mine installed tomorrow, so I'll let you know if any problems arise. They will have to bend some pipe for the tips, but it's not difficult. They also have to use a 2 1/4 to 2 1/2" connector pipe for the inlet, but thats pretty basic for an exhaust shop.

Quick links to the sound clips from back then....

Well, I got it installed today and everything went really smooth. I went to meineke because their exhaust guy does good work, and they usually give me a good deal on labor. The old exhaust was rusted and so badly welded, that the tips were unsalvagable. They drove me to a local supplier and I picked up 2 chrome tips for $30, and they actually look almost stock so I like it. The muffler install was $85, so I spend $200 total including the muffler online.

It's pretty quiet in my opinion, or at least it's very quiet inside the car. With the windows up I doubt you would even know it's on. Very nice deep tone, not raspy what so ever. No way a cop would look at you twice with this muffler on. The tips look 10 times better than the crappy twin tips, so I'm very pleased with it. I don't think it's as loud as the flowmaster, at least from those clips anyway.


He flipped the muffler and clocked it slightly so the inlet bend was smooth, and so he could route the oultet pipe under it. The right tip looks like it's lower, but it's just the angle of my driveway and the picture angle.

If I was planning on keeping my car for a few more years I would put that muffler on it.

Magnaflow FTW

It's getting louder as I break it in more. Kind of reminds me of aftermarket exhaust on a 4g63, really deep and not annoyingly loud. It gurgles when downshifting at lower rpms, sounds nice. Revving it just doesn't do it justice, under load it sounds much better.

I'll see if I can get a good take off video since the mic on my camera seems to be decent.

hmmmm, maybe i'll get one of those since i'm having trouble finding a mag rear section, i'm getting the header sometime next week.

Tried to get some videos today, but it was raining so no luck. Tomorrow looks better so we'll see. Either way I'll have a camcorder this weekend so I'll get something up.

The muffler was louder today, and I noticed a deeper bass inside the car. I think it might get a little louder in the next week, and that is fine by me.

I need to throw the stock intake on to see exactly what the exhaust sounds like at wot in high rpms. The intake seems to drown out the muffler above 3800 rpms, or at least inside the car it does.

do you find it to loud or is it a nice deep throaty sound, that wouldn't attract cops like the srt rear section would

It's not loud in my opinion, maybe a slight bit louder than stock g35/350z exhaust, but deeper and not as hollow of a sound. Not near as loud as the srt rear section. I haven't had a cop even look at me twice yet and I live 1 block from the police station

I got the best video I could outside and inside the car. Once I get the camcorder I'll have some good clips, because my mic has trouble picking up the exhaust from a distance.

Sweet. I love the way that Magnaflow sounds, it isn't ridiculously loud unless you give it a reason to be.

I love the Magnaflow on my car, the muffler is 1 1/2 year old and it looks like the day I bought it and thats with a shitload of road salt being all over it, and yes over time it does get louder and bassier.

hey just wanted to check up see how it sounds now after being broken in? theres a local guy selling the flowmaster version which i might pick up but i dunno if it will sound as good as the maggnaflow

It's sounding much nicer now. You know that sweet spot that the stock 350z hits around 2800 rpms? It's like that but a little deeper growl. The sweet spot on the magnaflow is between 2k and 4.5k rpms, but it doesn't get disturbingly loud. Black rose's flowmaster sounds louder and more high pitched, and seems to get louder up top.

The magnaflow actually kind of sounds like an intake. It's deep and mellow, but you can hear it pulsing like the intake does above 4K rpms, at least the stock intake with the top of the box removed.

The weather is nice tomorrow so I'll get a good video clip for you. I found a nice stretch of road where I can have some privacy. I can get some drive by's and take off clips without being bothered.

Still haven't got the camcorder from my friend (personal problems), but I think the sound on these clips are actually pretty good. It might not get the real bass of the the exhaust on crappy speakers, but with good speakers it sound almost dead on.

Compared to a broken, rusted R/T exhaust, will this magnaflow add any HP?

Probably 2-3 HP.

I did the dynomax camaro muffler. Long tube header, and no cat, its not unbearable, but it is kinda loud.
